Tasting Notes

About:

Wheated showcases Penelope’s commitment to balance and versatility.

It’s smooth and sweet with just enough rye to add a subtle spice. At 95 proof (47.5%), it’s bold yet remarkably drinkable. Perfect for sipping neat or in your favourite cocktail.

It’s one to love and share, and they’re proud to share it with us!
Appearance:
Dark Gold
Nose:
Caramel chews and loads of sweet toffee. there are some subtle rye spice notes on the nose that remind of dried fruits and lemon zest, it doesn’t come across as spicy in any classical idea of rye influences.

Condensed milk, Spanish latte’s and a decent chunk of toasted oak come through on the nose after it’s been in the glass for a while.
Palate:
A sweet start but then becomes quite drying right away. You do get that strong wheat influence with more chewy toffee, brown sugar, caramels, honey, gentle wood spices and a little hint of that rye influences. The rye still sits in that ‘dried fruit and lemon zest’ area – it isn’t overly minty of soapy, it’s just very softly giving some background support.
Finish:
A little brighter with the rye here, you do get a rush of mint and then it simmers down to more about the wheat and the wood. Gentle spices, cigar box spices, milk chocolate, orange oils, ginger and Angostura bitters. It’s a decently long finish with no building dryness, just soft rolling spices with added sweetness.
Comments:
This is really fun and quite comparable to something like Maker’s 46, but with a little more going on. It’s a fun, interesting, welcoming bourbon with a huge amount of possibilities when it comes to cocktails and mixed drinks, let alone neat pours at home. I’d easily add this to my shelf for the price.
