Tasting Notes

About:

Old Ezra 7-Year Barrel Strength is a 117-proof / 58.5% abv Kentucky bourbon that brings a whole lot of character for the money, especially if you manage to catch it at a good price – they’ve been moving around a bit over the last couple of years.
Appearance:
Dark caramel amber, a hint towards the flavors.
Nose:
A burst of freshly baked banana bread, complete with warm spices and a touch of roasted nuts. Then some oak char and tobacco with some of that American pecan pie richness. Give it time in the glass as it really opens up as you go – some more smokiness, a cinnamon roll glaze.
Palate:
Big caramel, dark cherry, and chocolate upfront. There’s also a satisfying cereal grain note that gives it texture and the proof is punchy but somehow not overpowering. There’s a bit of a feel of that dusty, older Heaven Hill profile that could come from the similar mash bill if not from the distillery itself.
Finish:
Long and warming. You get a lovely balance between candied sweetness and charred oak, with just enough spice and bitterness to keep things interesting. That classic “Kentucky hug” shows up right on time, pour me another glass.
Comments:
This one has become a repeat pour for me. I keep it on my bar and it seems to be steadily disappearing. I’d happily pay $70 for this (and have) and still feel good about it but I wouldn’t stretch beyond that. Luckily, with the current market correcting a bit, I’m sure it can be found in that $50–$60 zone in the right stores or even better. And at that price? It’s a no-brainer. Pick one up, crack it open, and thank yourself later.
