Ledaig 10 Years Old Review

Is Ledaig 10 the perfect stepping stone from Talisker into more complex peated whiskies? This Isle of Mull gem offers maritime smoke with surprising sweetness.

Tasting Notes:

About:
Ledaig’s 10 year old entry release is a peated single malt from the Tobermory Distillery on the Isle of Mull. Bottled at 46.3% it is non-chill filtered and naturally coloured. Tobermory’s peated range is made using peated barley with usually is around 30-40ppm.
Appearance:
A slightly cloudy deep gold.
Nose:
Straight away there is a strong salty maritime peat with warm bonfire smoke coming out of the glass. Once you have got past the smoke there is sweet toffee, milk chocolate and digestive biscuits adding a real friendly depth to the nose.
Palate:
The peat is prevalent on the first sip with the oily texture carrying lots of fruits on the first sip. The more medicinal flavours build with each return with a creamy velvet and sweet and salty popcorn. A slight pepper spice build with a dry earthy note at the back of the mouth.
Finish:
The finish is medium to long with the clove spice continuing to build even after the glass is empty and leaves a dark chocolate slightly bitter note on the tongue.
Comments:
Ledaig 10 year old is a fantastic peated entry in the Scotch whisky world and a personal shelf staple. If you are a fan of Talisker 10 or Ardmore Legacy I really recommend trying this as a step up in quality and presentation.
