Tasting Notes

About:

The 2023 edition of Laphroaig’s 25-Year-Old Cask Strength expression, crafted from the distillery’s own floor malted barley. Matured for 25 years in ex-bourbon casks, this single malt was bottled at natural colour and without chill filtration at 47.3% ABV.
Appearance:
Pale Gold
Nose:
The nose opens with very gentle peat aromas, with just a trace of medicinal iodine and restrained smoke. Sweet fruit notes surge behind the peat, led by pear drop sweets and green apples accompanied by vanilla and fresh pastry, a little reminiscent of a vanilla slice. In the background, there’s hints of cured ham and cinnamon spice.
Palate:
Surprisingly light with a creamy mouthfeel on the palate, dominated by tropical fruits including pineapple, peach, mango, and papaya. There’s a background hint of orange citrus alongside some white pepper spice.
Finish:
A long finish, with soft gentle peat and lingering refined smoke which becomes ashier at the close.
Comments:
The Laphroaig 25-Year-Old Cask Strength 2023 Edition exhibits the character and notes I like in older age statement or independently bottled Laphroaig whisky. The medicinal peat and iodine notes become more restrained allowing fruiter aspects to come to the foreground. I enjoyed the tropical fruit notes which harmoniously integrate with aged refined smoke. This 25-Year-Old cask strength bottling, demonstrates how Laphroaig’s spirit character evolves with age.
