About:

Jura has always divided opinion. For some, its spirit is understated. For others, that’s exactly its appeal. Sitting just across the water from Islay, Jura has never tried to compete with its smoky neighbour, instead building its reputation on a lighter, approachable house style shaped by gentle maritime influence and careful cask maturation. This 12 Year Old Sherry Cask Oloroso takes that familiar spirit and gives it greater depth through a finishing period in oloroso sherry casks. The result is recognisably Jura, but with more richness and confidence than the distillery’s younger expressions.
Appearance:
Deep amber with polished copper highlights. Good viscosity with slow, well-defined legs that hint at the richer cask influence.
Nose:
The sherry influence is immediately apparent, bringing raisins, orange marmalade and soft toffee before the distillery character begins to emerge. Honeyed malt, toasted almonds and gentle oak follow, while a subtle coastal freshness stops the nose from becoming overly rich. Given time, cinnamon and milk chocolate begin to develop, adding another layer without overwhelming the fruit.
Palate:
The texture is rounded and silky, opening with caramel and dried fruit before moving into roasted hazelnuts, dark honey and baked orange. The oloroso cask adds depth rather than sweetness alone, introducing warming spice and a touch of cocoa that sits comfortably alongside Jura’s lighter spirit. Everything feels balanced, with the oak providing structure while allowing the fruit to remain at the forefront.
Finish:
Medium to long, carrying soft baking spice, toasted oak and lingering orange peel, with gentle notes of dark chocolate and roasted nuts fading gradually.
Comments:
This is one of the most complete whiskies in Jura’s core range. The oloroso casks don’t attempt to transform the distillery character. Instead, they build on it, adding richness, texture and maturity while retaining the approachable style that has always defined Jura. If you’ve previously found Jura a little restrained, this expression makes a convincing case for giving the distillery another look. It won’t satisfy those chasing heavily sherried powerhouses, but for drinkers who value balance over intensity, it delivers exactly what it sets out to achieve.
