Indri Agneya Review

Can a touch of smoke transform a rich, tropical Indian single malt into something truly refined? Indri Agneya makes a compelling case for restraint over intensity.

Tasting Notes

About:

Indri has moved quickly into serious territory within Indian single malt, and while I was involved briefly at the very start of the brand strategy work, what matters now is how clearly that early direction translates into the glass. Agneya builds on the core house style but introduces a measured layer of smoke, designed to bring focus and tension to what is naturally a ripe, oak-driven spirit shaped by India’s climate and six-row barley.
Appearance:
Burnished gold with a light copper edge, showing good viscosity as the liquid clings to the glass before forming slow, even legs.
Nose:
Cocoa powder and dried fruit lead the way, followed by vanilla pod and toasted nuts, while a gentle, earthy smoke sits through the centre rather than dominating; it feels integrated, adding structure to the sweeter notes, with a faint tropical lift sitting quietly in the background.
Palate:
The texture arrives first, rounded and slightly oily, before sweet malt moves into mango and overripe banana, then deepens into caramel and toasted oak, with a steady thread of smoke running through the middle; the peat adds grip and definition, keeping the sweetness in check while allowing the oak to assert itself without becoming drying.
Finish:
Medium to long, carrying sweet spice and a faint salinity, with the smoke lingering softly rather than overtaking, leaving a clean and controlled fade.
Comments:
This is where Indri becomes more defined, as the addition of smoke brings structure to a spirit that could otherwise lean too heavily into warmth and fruit; the core character remains intact, but the balance feels tighter and more considered, making this a strong option for drinkers who want a modern smoky whisky with restraint rather than intensity.
