Green Spot Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey Review

Green Spot is a product of Mitchell & Son, a Dublin wine merchant which was founded in 1805. The company would purchase new-make whiskey from local distilleries and mature it in its own casks, many of which had previously held sherry, port and other fortified wines.

Rather than naming each whiskey, Mitchell & Son marked its casks with coloured spots to indicate their age. A blue spot was for whiskey matured for around seven years, a green spot for around ten years, a yellow spot for around twelve years, and a red spot for around fifteen years. Although the coloured spots began as a simple warehouse marking system, they eventually became the names of some of Ireland’s most iconic whiskeys. Today, however, Green Spot carries no official age statement, with the whiskey generally regarded as having an average maturation age of between seven and nine years.

Today, Green Spot is produced at Midleton Distillery, alongside celebrated Irish brands including Jameson, Redbreast and Midleton Very Rare. It’s a traditional single pot still Irish whiskey, made from a mash bill of both malted and unmalted barley and distilled three times in copper pot stills. The inclusion of unmalted barley is a requirement for pot still whiskey, and contributes to a creamy texture and gentle peppery spice.
