Tasting Notes

About:

A single malt from the Highlands Glencadam Distillery, the Glencadam Reserva PX expression is crafted by the Master Distiller in small batches. First matured in ex-bourbon American oak casks, the whisky is expertly married and then finished in hand-selected Pedro Ximénez sherry butts sourced from Andalucía, Spain. Bottled at natural colour and without chill filtration at 46% ABV.
Appearance:
Deep Copper
Nose:
On the nose, aromas of Christmas fruitcake filled with dried raisins and sultanas, alongside stewed cherries and figs. There is a touch of dark chocolate mousse, balance by cedar, clove and cinnamon.
Palate:
The palate opens with a mildly oily mouthfeel before giving way to maple syrup and toffee, combined with dried fruits and jammy blackcurrant and cherry compote. Rich dark chocolate fudge cake follows.
Finish:
Medium to long, a warming finish with lingering hints of fruitcake, crystalised ginger and caramel espresso.
Comments:
One for sherry cask whisky fans, the Pedro Ximénez finishing cask influence on the Glencadam Reserva PX is undeniable, with lots of dried fruit, chocolate and toffee notes. Despite this, the Pedro Ximénez influence isn’t overwhelming or overpowered but contributes to a layered and balanced experience which shifts between fruits, sweetness (and a touch of bittersweetness), and spice.

Glencadam flies a bit under the radar, but given the price point the Resserva PX is a must buy for sherry cask enthusiasts, and I feel the expression competes with, and surpasses, some well known brands.
