Glasgow 1770 The Original Cask Strength Batch 02 Review

Can a cask-strength whisky stay vibrant and fruity, not fiery? Glasgow 1770 Batch 02 delivers zesty orange, crème brûlée sweetness, and oak spice.

Tasting Notes

About:

A limited-edition release from The Glasgow Distillery, the Glasgow 1770 Cask Strength editions showcase the brand’s signature styles while offering whisky enthusiasts the opportunity to experience the distillery’s raw, unadulterated character, straight from the cask. Released in 2024, the Glasgow 1770 The Original Cask Strength Batch 02 reveals the defining fruity characteristics central to the distillery’s unpeated double distilled style. The expression was matured in three heavily charred first fill ex-bourbon casks, then finished in virgin oak casks. Only 750 bottles were produced bottled without chill filtration and with natural colour, at 59.5% ABV.
Appearance:
Bright Copper
Nose:
Bright and fresh aromas open, led by lots of orange citrus and zest. Fruity notes of plums, stewed pears and apples follow accompanied by hints of pineapple and apricot. There are also aromas of freshly cut grass, toffee and sweet marzipan, with background oak.
Palate:
The palate opens some quite tart and tangy orange citrus, developing into rich marmalade notes before giving way to sweeter notes of butterscotch, vanilla crème brulee and honey. Fruity notes follow, with pear, raisins, dates, figs and apricots. Richly mouthcoating and creamy.
Finish:
A long finish, Seville orange marmalade lingers with spicy oak, accompanied by flashes of pepper, anise, and nutmeg.
Comments:
A much more intense and unrestrained version of the core range bottling, the Glasgow 1770 The Original Cask Strength Batch 02 is defined by those bold fresh fruity notes, balanced by layers of wood and sweetness. It’s the bold fruits, particularly the orange citrus, which linger throughout the experience but I enjoyed the interaction and balance especially with the notes of marzipan, crème brulee and oak. Ideal for fans of cask strength and fruity whisky, with a great price point for a limited-edition bottling.
