About:

Brooklyn Brewing in New York state has brought to the table their “Black Ops” Stout. The marketing materials explain the beer thusly, “We can neither confirm nor deny its existence. However, if it did exist, it would be a robust stout originally concocted by the Brooklyn brewing team under the cover of secrecy and hidden from everyone else at the brewery. Supposedly this vintage of Black Ops is aged for months in Four Roses Small Batch Bourbon barrels. Such a beer would combine big chocolate and coffee notes with a rich underpinning of vanilla-like oak. Is Black Ops real? We can’t say. But we’ll think you’ll love it.”

I’m not positive what else there is to say on this. It’s a barrel aged stout, which should have your mouth watering. From their website, “Brooklyn Brewing started with a dream to return brewing to Brooklyn, once a powerhouse of American beer production. Today our beers travel to more than half the United States and over thirty countries. Our James Beard Award-winning Brewmaster Garrett Oliver and his team brew everything from classic styles to bold experiments and collaborate with brewers, innovators and artists from around the globe. We’ve met wonderful people in remarkable places, and we can’t wait to show everyone what’s next.”
Appearance:
Stout – It’s jet black with a sheep’s wool foam head.
Nose:
Rich malts of chocolate and vanilla, hint of bourbon oak, cocoa nibs, and layer cake.
Palate:
Great body of oak and just a hint of bitterness from char. Everything is cloaked in warm chocolate truffles & bourbon vanilla. No residual alcohol profile to distract from the thick heavenly body of the beer. If you KNOW Four Roses Small Batch Bourbon you might be able to find specific profile pieces in the beer, but overall the Four Roses Small Batch lifts up and doesn’t distract from the excellent flavor of this beer.
Finish:
Long finish (for a beer) of dark chocolate and hints of bourbon. Excellent finish with a nice malty stickiness to the throat. Overall excellent.
Comments:
This is a creamy pint!!

Velvety and smooth with just lovely chocolate complexity. It’s malty, it’s sweet, it’s aromatic, and just what you’re looking for in a high ABV barrel aged stout! The drink is thick and velvety, the abv doesn’t overpower but it’ll creep up on you as your glass empties. It has perfect carbonation to make a long lasting head and not ruin the texture of the beer.

Really quite nice.
