The Macallan Opens First West Coast Boutique at LAX

Los Angeles International Airport has become home to a new luxury whisky destination. The Macallan unveiled its first West Coast boutique in the Tom Bradley International Terminal on July 23.

The 92-square-meter space sits alongside high-end retailers including Hermès, Gucci, Cartier, and Burberry, positioning the single malt scotch whisky brand within LAX’s luxury shopping corridor.

The opening comes as Los Angeles prepares to host major international events, including the 2026 FIFA World Cup and 2028 Summer Olympics.

The new retail space showcases an immersive concept called “Nurtured by Nature,” designed in collaboration with architect Jamie Fobert. The boutique incorporates materials directly linked to whisky production, including oak wood referencing the brand’s signature casks and copper elements reflecting its distillery stills.

A distinctive wave wall mirrors the roof design of The Macallan’s Speyside distillery in Scotland. The space features an Albariza brick wall made from white soil used in sherry grape cultivation in Jerez de la Frontera, Spain, highlighting the importance of sherry cask seasoning in the whisky-making process.

Local artist Sarah Ippolito created an exclusive “Dancing Leaf” installation for the boutique. The sculpture takes its form from American oak tree leaves, representing one of the essential cask types used in The Macallan’s maturation process. The artwork displays a spectrum of natural colors found in the distillery’s single malts.

“Bringing The Macallan to Los Angeles International Airport is an exciting step for us, marking our first West Coast boutique and an important new chapter for the brand in the Americas,” said Kasper Andersen, Regional Managing Director for Global Travel Retail at Edrington.

Denise Sample, Director of Concessions and Tenant Relations, Los Angeles World Airports, added: “The opening of The Macallan boutique adds a new dimension to the retail landscape at Tom Bradley International Terminal. As LAX continues to evolve as a premier global gateway, we are excited to welcome this renowned brand and its retail concept. The Macallan’s partnership with DFS further strengthens LAX’s reputation as a destination for luxury shopping and discovery.”

The Macallan LAX Location Offers Exclusive Whisky Experiences

The boutique provides several specialized services for travelers. A private consultation room allows for tastings and exclusive experiences, while trained hosts guide visitors through the whisky portfolio. A dedicated gifting area offers complimentary gift-wrapping and personalization services.

The location stocks an expanded selection of releases, including boutique-exclusive, limited edition, and travel-exclusive whiskies such as the Colour Collection. Ultra-prestige expressions are also available, targeting collectors and enthusiasts.

The shopping experience includes an ambient soundscape created by Mimi Xu Studio using field recordings from The Macallan Estate in Scotland. Botanical-inspired visual merchandising and olfactory displays throughout the space reference the natural environment of the Speyside distillery.

DFS Group partnered with The Macallan for this venture, continuing its strategy of bringing luxury brands to airport retail environments. The collaboration represents both companies’ focus on engaging international travelers with premium offerings.

Daniel Licari, Senior Director of Merchandising at DFS Group, commented: “The boutique’s immersive design, innovative storytelling, and exclusive range of ultra-prestige expressions reflect our ongoing commitment to

offering travellers unique, memorable moments and access to the world’s finest brands.”

The boutique opening strengthens The Macallan’s travel retail presence in the Americas region. With LAX serving as a major international gateway, the location provides access to global travelers passing through one of the world’s busiest airports.

The timing aligns with Los Angeles’s rising profile as a host city for international events. The upcoming World Cup and Olympics are expected to bring increased international traffic through LAX, providing expanded exposure for the Scottish whisky brand.

This marks The Macallan’s latest investment in experiential retail, following similar boutique openings in other major travel hubs. The brand continues to focus on creating immersive environments that communicate its heritage and production methods to both existing enthusiasts and new consumers discovering single malt whisky.
