Talisker Magma 47-Year-Old: Volcanic Rock-Toasted Scotch

Talisker has unveiled Talisker Magma 47-Year-Old, an ultra-aged single malt scotch whisky finished in American oak casks toasted using heated volcanic rocks from the Isle of Skye. Limited to just 622 bottles worldwide, the expression carries a recommended retail price of $5,250 (£XX) excluding taxes.

The release represents the most limited expression in the Skye distillery’s recent history. It draws on a cask-toasting technique first introduced with Talisker Molten Seas, now applied to a whisky matured for nearly half a century.

Talisker Magma was initially aged in refill American oak hogsheads before undergoing a four-month finish in new American oak casks. Rather than using traditional open-flame toasting, the distillery heated volcanic rocks sourced from Skye and rotated the barrels around them. Steaming during the process kept the casks hydrated and maintained a controlled temperature.

The technique avoids direct combustion, which the distillery says develops greater fruit character alongside depth and complexity.

Greg Bruce, master blender, said: "Talisker Magma represents a new frontier in how we approach cask finishes at the distillery. Working with volcanic rock-toasted casks allowed us to unearth new depths, revealing greater layers of fruit, smoke and spice."

Bruce added: "There’s a deeply elemental connection in this whisky, linking the distillery to Skye’s volcanic landscapes, while preserving Talisker’s signature maritime character and chilli-pepper warmth."

Official tasting notes from the brand describe a nose of soft minerality, sea-washed character, and Talisker’s familiar chili-pepper warmth. The palate delivers a smooth, silky texture building into volcanic spice, salinity, and sweetness. The finish is long and balanced, with cooling Sichuan pepper and a warm afterglow.

The bottle is crafted from 100% recycled glass featuring a gradient fade from clear to black, intended to evoke ocean depths and molten stone. Each bottle includes a hand-sculpted glass stopper inspired by volcanic obsidian, making every piece subtly unique.

Talisker is owned by Diageo and has operated on the Isle of Skye since 1830. The distillery has increasingly explored experimental cask finishes in its premium and ultra-premium ranges.

Talisker Magma 47-Year-Old will be available through private client teams and select luxury retailers in the UK, select European and APAC markets, the US, and global travel retail.
