Royal Salute has unveiled the latest release in its Polo Collection, introducing the Royal Salute 21 Year Old Rio de Janeiro Polo Edition. Available globally in limited quantities from April 1, 2025, the new expression is priced from $190 USD (£150) at specialist retailers.
The seventh edition in the Polo Collection draws on the energy of Rio de Janeiro and Brazil’s thriving polo scene. Royal Salute’s ongoing connection with polo remains central to the collection, as the brand continues to explore the relationship between whisky craftsmanship and the sport’s cultural heritage.
A Whisky Inspired by Rio’s Energy and Landscape
Crafted by Royal Salute Master Blender Sandy Hyslop, the 21 Year Old Rio de Janeiro Polo Edition is a blended malt whisky designed to reflect the vibrant character of its namesake city. The whisky includes a portion of spirit from Braeval Distillery, matured in first-fill casks, delivering floral and grassy notes reminiscent of Rio’s lush surroundings. These are balanced by malt whiskies aged in American oak, contributing sweet vanilla and coconut flavors.
“Coming alive with the creamy sweetness of vanilla and coconut, the fruity notes in this blended malt whisky are like an intricate dance – much like the Bossa Nova performed on a warm Brazilian evening,” Hyslop said. “To make a blend as special as its inspiration, we incorporated Braeval whisky matured in first-fill casks. This has not only allowed us to give it a new dimension, but it also resulted in a taste experience as captivating and multi-layered as Rio itself, a true representation of the city’s irresistible charm.”
The official tasting notes describe a rich and fruity profile, layered with sweet, creamy, and floral elements designed to mirror the complexity of Rio’s cultural and natural landscape.
Packaging Evokes the Brazilian Flag and Rio’s Landmarks
The visual presentation of the Rio de Janeiro Polo Edition continues Royal Salute’s focus on distinctive design. The whisky is housed in a vivid green flagon, reflecting the lush greenery around Rio de Janeiro and the colors of Brazil’s national flag. Gold detailing and a decorative box featuring Rio’s skyline and scenery complete the presentation.
