Rock Island 16-Year-Old Sherry Edition Whisky Released

Extended Sherry Maturation Defines New Island Whisky Release

The Rock Island 16-Year-Old Sherry Edition combines single malts from four Scottish whisky-producing islands: Orkney, Arran, Jura, and Islay. This follows the successful launch of the 14-Year-Old Sherry Edition in 2023, with the additional aging time allowing for enhanced flavor development.

The official tasting notes describe layers of dried fruits, walnut, and vanilla, complemented by honeycomb and toasted almonds. These flavors build upon Rock Island’s characteristic sweet peat and maritime influence. The whisky maintains the same 46.8% ABV as its younger sibling, enabling direct comparison between the two expressions.

Rock Island 16-Year-Old Sherry Edition showcases extended maturation in hand-selected sherry casks.

Douglas Laing, founded in 1948 and still family-owned, continues its tradition of non-chill filtered releases without artificial coloring. The company’s “Remarkable Regional Malts” portfolio represents different Scottish whisky regions, with Rock Island showcasing the island category.

Premium Positioning Reflects Growing Whisky Market Demand

The new release carries a retail price of $75.00 (€90.00), positioning it in the premium segment of the blended malt category. Distribution will span specialist retailers and online channels across Europe, the Americas, and Asia Pacific markets.

“Rock Island 16-Year-Old is a release we are all incredibly excited about at Douglas Laing,” said Chloe Wood, Rock Island’s Brand Manager. “The brand itself showcases a truly unique composition, containing Single Malts from some of Scotland’s most acclaimed Whisky-making islands.”

This marks the first 16-year-old expression under the Rock Island brand, representing a significant milestone for the product line. The extended maturation in predominantly sherry casks differentiates this release from standard Rock Island offerings.

The Scottish whisky industry continues to see strong demand for aged statements and sherry cask expressions. According to the Scotch Whisky Association, exports reached £6.2 billion in 2023, with premium aged whiskies driving much of the growth.

The release comes packaged in premium foiled cartons with updated labeling that reflects what the company describes as “modern and powerful” branding while maintaining maritime heritage connections. As with all Douglas Laing releases, the whisky undergoes no chill filtration, preserving natural oils and compounds that can enhance mouthfeel and flavor.
