Louisville-based Pursuit Spirits has released “The Alpha Barrel,” an ultra-limited barrel proof single barrel expression of its flagship Pursuit United Bourbon. The release, announced on February 23, 2026, marks the highest proof bottling in the brand’s history and yields just 81 bottles, priced at $99.99 each.

The whiskey originated as an R&D experiment in December 2023, when the Pursuit United blend was re-entered into a single barrel at full strength to study the effects of extended secondary aging.

After more than two years of additional maturation, the liquid was bottled on February 12, 2026. During that period the proof climbed from an entry of 118 to 132.4, making it the strongest Pursuit United Bourbon ever released.

The experiment carried particular interest because the wheated component of Pursuit United uses a lower barrel entry proof of 102 to achieve its signature balance. According to the brand, the barrel “defied standard aging conventions.”

“We are extremely excited at the result of this experiment,” said Ryan Cecil, co-founder and master blender of Pursuit Spirits. “The ‘Alpha Barrel’ proved that our blend can not only handle higher proofs but thrive with extended aging.”

Cecil added: “Because of this success, we are officially beginning the process of laying down more barrels for further single barrel releases. While this initial launch is extremely limited, we look forward to scaling this program and opening it up to our retail and on-premise accounts in the future.”

High evaporation rates over the extended aging period account for the small yield of 81 bottles. A portion of the run will be available at the Pursuit Spirits Whiskey Row location at 722 W. Main St., Louisville, Kentucky, starting Wednesday, February 25, 2026.

Remaining bottles will be reserved exclusively for P.Club members through an allocation release scheduled for late February.

Pursuit Spirits was founded by the creators of Bourbon Pursuit, widely recognized as one of the leading bourbon podcasts in the United States. Rather than operating a traditional distillery, the company has built its reputation on a blending-focused model, sourcing bourbon and rye barrels from multiple distilleries across the country and combining them into small-batch expressions.

The brand’s flagship Pursuit United line unites diverse mash bills and barrel types. Pursuit Spirits also operates a distillery location at 1700 Mellwood Ave. in Louisville, where it produces its Mellwood Legacy Collection, as well as a cocktail lounge called Trial + Error on Whiskey Row.

The barrel proof single barrel program now inaugurated by The Alpha Barrel signals an expansion of the brand’s portfolio into higher-proof, single-cask territory.
