Morrison Scotch Whisky Distillers unveiled a limited edition whisky created from an operational mishap that combined casks from two prestigious Scottish distilleries nearly a decade ago.

Origins of Old Perth 21 Year Old Traced to 2015 Blending ‘Accident’

The unusual whisky emerged when casks from Speyside’s Macallan and Orkney’s Highland Park were ‘accidentally’ combined in 2015. The Highland Park component, distilled in 2004, was 10 to 11 years old at the time, while the Macallan portion was considerably older. Morrison Scotch Whisky Distillers transferred this unexpected mixture into Oloroso Sherry Butts for further aging.

The company previously released the blend as 12, 13, and 14-year-old expressions between 2017 and 2018. The whisky gained a following among collectors who recognized its unique character.

“This release is as much about serendipity as it is about craftsmanship,” said Graeme Mackeddie, Production Director at Morrison Scotch Whisky Distillers. “An operational ‘accident’ back in 2015 has given us a whisky that can never be recreated. The union of Macallan and Highland Park, enhanced by long maturation in Oloroso sherry butts, has produced a liquid of exceptional character and rarity.”

Old Perth 21 Year Old Features Distinctive Flavor Profile

The mature expression contains whisky aged at least 21 years, bottled at 43.6% ABV. Official tasting notes describe rich sherried fruit, warming spices, and gentle oak flavors. The finish reportedly combines Macallan’s refined character with Highland Park’s subtle smoke notes.

The Oloroso Sherry Butt maturation adds depth to the whisky’s profile. Morrison Scotch Whisky Distillers emphasized that this particular combination cannot be replicated due to the circumstances of its creation.

Limited quantities will reach specialist retailers in the UK and Europe on October 3, 2025, priced at £178. The release represents one of Morrison’s most exclusive offerings, targeting collectors interested in rare Scottish whisky expressions.

The company positions this release as demonstrating Old Perth’s commitment to quality and provenance, though the whisky’s creation resulted from chance rather than deliberate planning. Each bottle represents a piece of whisky history that emerged from an unexpected blending incident.
