New Bourbon Brand Launches at Virginia Estate

Virginia’s horse country welcomes a new player to the American whiskey scene as Middleburg Barrel Company debuts 1787 Provenance Bourbon, featuring two Kentucky-distilled expressions that have already earned medals at the 2024 American Whiskey Masters competition.

The new brand, launching at the historic Provenance Estate in Middleburg, offers visitors an immersive experience where they can tour rickhouses containing over 2,000 aging barrels and blend their own custom bourbon under expert guidance.

Premium Bourbon Whiskey Expressions

The inaugural release includes two distinct offerings. The 1787 Provenance Straight Bourbon Whiskey, aged 7 years and bottled at 107 proof, carries a suggested retail price of $69.99. According to official tasting notes, this Bardstown-distilled expression features “rich and vivid” flavors layered with baking spice, toffee, and soft tobacco.

The premium offering, 1787 Provenance 14-Year Straight Bourbon Whiskey, comes in at 122 proof with an SRP of $259.99. Distilled in Frankfort, Kentucky, the official tasting notes describe it as “bold and viscous, with Luxardo cherry, brown sugar, cracked pepper, and a long, complex finish.”

Both expressions demonstrated immediate market credibility at the 2024 American Whiskey Masters competition, where the 7-year variant earned a Master Medal while the 14-year secured Gold.

Principal Whiskeymaker Jay West, formerly a critic at Whiskey Raiders, personally selects each barrel at the Virginia estate. West built his reputation reviewing thousands of whiskeys before transitioning from evaluation to creation, now overseeing both single-barrel releases and blended expressions.

Virginia Estate Offers Hands-On Whiskey Experience

The 121-acre Provenance Estate provides more than traditional distillery tours. Visitors can taste directly from aging barrels through a “thieving” process, select their preferred whiskey, and leave with custom-labeled bottles. The facility also offers entire barrel purchases for collectors seeking exclusive ownership.

Founder Viyas Sundaram brings entrepreneurial experience from four successful company exits and previous ventures including The Bourbon Concierge, a retailer specializing in rare spirits. His latest project positions Virginia—a state with colonial-era whiskey roots—as an emerging destination in America’s bourbon renaissance.

“Provenance is about honoring the past while shaping bourbon’s future. We built this brand to showcase how exceptional barrels and thoughtful blending can create whiskeys that stand with the very best,” said Sundaram.

The brand’s rickhouses now hold over 2,000 casks aging in conditions designed to develop complexity over time. Unlike traditional Kentucky operations, Provenance sources its liquid from established distilleries while focusing on barrel selection and blending expertise.

1787 Provenance Bourbon is currently available through The Bourbon Concierge’s online platform and select retailers across the Washington, D.C., Virginia, and Maryland region, including Verified Wines and Shared Pour.
