The Macallan has announced the ninth edition of its annual Classic Cut series, a high-strength single malt Scotch whisky bottled at 50.6% ABV. The 2025 Edition, priced at $130 (£130), continues the distillery’s tradition of releasing limited expressions at the whisky maker’s preferred strength.

The 2025 Classic Cut

Macallan’s Classic Cut 2025 release combines maturation in sherry seasoned European and American oak casks with ex-Bourbon barrels, creating what the distillery describes as “anything but classic.” According to the official tasting notes, the whisky presents aromas of orange oil, barley sugar, and milk chocolate on the nose, with vanilla panna cotta and apple turnover emerging with a touch of water.

This is the ninth release in Macallan’s Classic Cut series, which launched in 2017 as an annual limited release, with each edition bottled at cask strength or near cask strength. This approach allows drinkers to experience Macallan whisky at its most intense concentration before dilution.

Premium Scotch Whiskey Market Sees Continued Innovation

The 2025 Edition’s golden sunset color comes naturally from its cask maturation, without artificial coloring. The distillery emphasizes that adding water to the dram reveals “a multisensory myriad of dynamic and evolving flavours,” uncovering new depths of character.

The Macallan is owned by Edrington Group, and the brand has positioned itself as a luxury whisky producer, with its limited editions and special releases commanding premium prices in the global market.

The Classic Cut series represents one of several annual releases from The Macallan, alongside its core range and other limited editions. Each year’s Classic Cut expression features a different ABV and flavor profile, determined by the whisky making team.

The 2025 Edition joins previous Classic Cut releases that have ranged in strength from 48% to 58.4% ABV. The series targets whisky enthusiasts seeking bold, undiluted expressions that showcase the distillery’s house style at full intensity. The Macallan Classic Cut 2025 Edition is available now through select retailers and the distillery’s online boutique.
