The Whisky Shop has unveiled an exclusive The Macallan limited-edition 12 Year Old single malt bottled at 110 proof (55% ABV). The official release will be available exclusively through The Whisky Shop in the UK and Europe and launches on October 29th at a retail price of £125 ($162).

The new expression represents a higher-strength interpretation of The Macallan’s classic 12 Year Old range, which is typically at 40% ABV. The single malt was matured predominantly in European sherry oak casks, with additional influence from American sherry-seasoned oak.

According to The Whisky Shop, the release marks “one of The Whisky Shop’s most prestigious exclusives.”

Official tasting notes from the brand describe aromas of “baked figs, plum jam, nutmeg and a twist of orange peel.” The palate features “layers of toffee apple, Christmas cake, dark honey and clove, with the sweetness deepened by roasted hazelnut and a touch of cocoa.” While the finish carries “notes of treacle, rich sherried sweetness and gentle oak spice.”

The Macallan are one of the world’s most prestigious single malt scotch whiskies and this exclusive Whisky Shop iteration is the first high-strength age-statement release we have seen from the distillery for a number of years. Some of Macallan’s Classic Cut releases have been around 52%, but other than that we have to go back to the Edition 6 (48.6%) for a high strength release – but of course let us know in the comments if we’ve missed something.

Higher-proof whiskies have always been popular among collectors and enthusiasts seeking more intense flavor profiles. You just need to look at the historic Macallan 10 year old versus it’s cask strength version to see how cask strength and limited-edition releases often command premium prices in the secondary market.

The Whisky Shop operates specialist retail stores across the UK and Europe, focusing on premium and rare whisky releases. The retailer frequently partners with major distilleries for exclusive bottlings, including Macallan.

The launch timing coincides with the pre-holiday shopping season, when luxury spirits typically see increased demand. Limited releases from The Macallan have historically sold quickly upon release so act fast if you’re a fan.
