Kingsbarns Distillery has unveiled its first age statement release, marking a significant milestone for the St. Andrews-based producer and the broader Lowland whiskey region. The new 10-year-old single malt arrives as independent Scottish distilleries continue to challenge established players in the premium whiskey market.
New Lowland Whiskey From Kingsbarn
The limited release has been aged in 90% ex-Bourbon barrels and 10% STR (Shaved, Toasted and Re-charred) red wine barriques, creating what the distillery describes as its signature light, fruity house style. According to the official tasting notes, the expression delivers soft vanilla and tropical sweetness from the Bourbon casks, while the wine barriques add depth, richness and gentle spice.

“Our aim from the beginning was to create a light, elegant Lowland-style whisky that spoke to its East Coast origins,” said William Wemyss, Director of Kingsbarns Distillery. “This expression is proof that patience and precision has paid off.”
The distillery, which opened in 2014, produces all its whiskey on-site using locally sourced barley and water drawn from beneath the facility. Each release is natural in color and non-chill filtered, practices increasingly favored by whiskey enthusiasts seeking authentic expressions.
Independent Whiskey Producers Drive Scottish Innovation
Kingsbarns forms part of Wemyss Family Spirits, an independent drinks company founded by siblings William and Isabella Wemyss. The portfolio also includes Wemyss Malts and Darnley’s Gin. Isabella Wemyss serves as the distillery’s blender, overseeing cask selection and spirit development since production began.
The launch comes as Scotland’s whiskey industry experiences renewed interest in regional styles, particularly from smaller producers. Lowland whiskey, traditionally lighter and more delicate than Highland or Islay expressions, has seen several new distilleries open in recent years.
The 10-year-old expression will be available from September 2025 through the distillery’s website and select specialist retailers. Pricing information was not disclosed in the announcement.
As Scotland’s whiskey industry continues to evolve, releases like Kingsbarns’ 10-year-old demonstrate how newer distilleries are establishing their credentials alongside centuries-old producers. The focus on local ingredients and transparent production methods reflects changing consumer preferences in the global whiskey market.
