Kentucky Bourbon Industry Reaches $10.6 Billion Economic Impact Despite Global Headwinds

Kentucky’s bourbon distilling industry now generates $10.6 billion in annual economic impact while supporting nearly 24,000 jobs across the state, according to a new biennial report. The comprehensive study reveals the signature industry purchased a record 84% of its corn from Kentucky farmers and generated $372 million in state and local tax revenue.

The eighth edition of the economic impact report, conducted by University of Kentucky economist Dr. Mike Clark, shows the industry has grown from $9 billion in the previous 2024 study.

However, Kentucky Distillers’ Association President Eric Gregory warned that mounting challenges threaten future growth.

“This comprehensive analysis demonstrates the economic impact of Kentucky’s homegrown and historic Bourbon industry, which remains significantly ahead in jobs, investment and stature from over a decade ago,” Gregory said.

“Bourbon is a long-term business, and the data shows that its Kentucky foundation remains strong. But we also must remember that its future isn’t guaranteed and this data is a snapshot in time.”

The industry faces headwinds including volatile global trade conditions, shifting consumer preferences, soaring barrel taxes, and geopolitical factors that have slowed alcohol sales and reduced exports.

Kentucky’s distilling sector now supports 23,935 jobs with $2 billion in wages and benefits, an increase of more than 800 positions despite recent industry cutbacks.

The state hosts 125 licensed distilleries operated by 104 companies across 45 of Kentucky’s 120 counties.

Distillers paid $75 million in aging barrel taxes in 2025, representing a 163% surge over five years. The industry stores a record 17.1 million barrels of spirits, including 16.1 million bourbon barrels.

“Despite national challenges from tariffs and harmful federal policies, Kentucky’s $10.6 billion bourbon industry continues to show the world its importance,” said Governor Andy Beshear.

The sector purchases 27.3 million bushels of corn annually and plans to invest another $1.45 billion over the next five years.

Kentucky dominates national distilling with 27% of both spirits output and employment, while Tennessee ranks second at 8.4%.
