Kavalan Whisky has reached a landmark 1,000 gold medals, marking two decades since the Taiwanese distillery produced its first new make spirit in 2005. The distillery also revealed that its Solist ex-Bourbon Cask is its most awarded expression of all time, a distinction confirmed by near-perfect scores from international judging panels.

"Behind our one thousand medals is a great trove of fascinating information, revealing our most highly judged whiskies over the years," said King Car Chairman Mr. YT Lee.

"The winner may surprise you: but it was the Solist ex-Bourbon Cask that came out as our most awarded whisky of all time," Lee added. "IWSC judges have given it near-perfect scores of 98–100 and it’s been praised for its remarkable depth and elegance. Solist Vinho Barrique and Solist Oloroso Sherry took out 2nd and 3rd spots."

The official tasting notes from the brand describe the Solist ex-Bourbon Cask as "deeply expressive, delivering notes of vanilla, coconut, caramel, and toasted oak spice."

Kavalan is widely considered one of the leading brands in world whisky. The Yilan County distillery’s success is rooted in its use of Taiwan’s subtropical climate to accelerate maturation while maintaining precise cask control.

This approach creates a rich, layered house style defined by vibrant tropical fruit character. Kavalan now has an annual production capacity of 10 million bottles, placing it among the largest single malt whisky distilleries in the world.

The distillery has averaged more than 100 awards per year over the past five years. Its whiskies have earned recognition at competitions including the International Spirits Challenge, International Wine & Spirit Competition, World Whiskies Awards, San Francisco World Spirits Competition, International Whisky Competition, Beverage Testing Institute, World Whisky Masters, and the Tokyo Whisky & Spirits Competition.

King Car Group’s Founder Mr. TT Lee and Chairman Mr. YT Lee were inducted into the World Whiskies Awards Hall of Fame in 2018 in recognition of their contributions to the industry.

Approximately 58% of Kavalan’s gold medals come from cask strength expressions, while 42% come from non-cask strength releases. The distillery has secured ten World’s Best whisky titles in just 11 years.

Kavalan has also earned more than 40 trophies for its distillery experience, spanning visitor engagement, brand storytelling, innovation, and sustainability.

The distillery sources crystal meltwaters from Snow Mountain and benefits from sea and mountain breezes in Yilan County. These environmental conditions contribute to what the brand describes as Kavalan’s signature creaminess.

Kavalan’s milestone arrives at a time of growing global interest in whisky from non-traditional producing regions. Taiwan, Japan, India, and Australia have all gained significant traction among consumers and collectors over the past decade, challenging the long-standing dominance of Scotland and the United States. The broader world whisky category continues to expand shelf space in both on-trade and off-trade channels internationally.

King Car Group, Kavalan’s parent company, brings more than 45 years of beverage-making expertise to the operation. The group’s sustained investment in distilling infrastructure has helped position Kavalan as a major force in the premium single malt segment worldwide.
