Jack Daniel’s marks the beginning of the 2025 distilling season with a departure from its traditional sour mash process. The Tennessee distillery has unveiled its latest experimental release, a sweet mash whiskey aged nearly nine years in specific barrelhouse locations.
New Sweet Mash Whiskey Showcases Production Technique
The Jack Daniel Distillery Series Selection #15 represents the brand’s annual sweet mash production run. Master Distiller Chris Fletcher explained the significance: “Our Distillery Series has experimented with every step in the whiskey making process from grain bill to barreling, and this release showcases yet another lever that we can pull and tweak here at the Jack Daniel Distillery.”
The sweet mash process occurs at the start of each distilling season before the distillery transitions to its standard sour mash method. This technique creates distinct flavor characteristics that differ from Jack Daniel’s regular expressions.
The whiskey uses the same grain bill as other Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskeys: 80% corn, 12% malted barley, and 8% rye. Distilled in 2016, the whiskey spent almost nine years aging on the top floors of the Tract 2 barrelhouses, where higher temperatures create more intense barrel interaction.
Limited Tennessee Whiskey Release
Quality Control Manager Kathy Thurmond selected this expression for bottling at 117 proof (58.5% ABV). The official tasting notes describe rich butterscotch flavors with undertones of pecan, berry, and caramel. Previous releases have tested different grain bills, barrel types, and aging conditions. The series offers whiskey enthusiasts opportunities to taste unique expressions outside the brand’s core range.
The 375ml bottles carry a suggested retail price of $44.99. Distribution remains highly limited, with availability only in Tennessee and at the White Rabbit Bottle Shop at the Jack Daniel Distillery in Lynchburg.
