Love & Whiskey: The Relationship Between Nearest Green & Jack Daniel

Through meticulous research, Fawn Weaver has uncovered the intricacies of Nearest Green’s relationship with Jack Daniel. The two had a remarkable bond and, throughout his life, Jack Daniel worked to protect the legacy of his friend and mentor.

Nearest was born into slavery in 1820 and emancipated following the end of the Civil War. Jack Daniel, born between 1846 and 1850, was a child at the time and his father died whilst serving in the Confederate Army. Despite their vastly different experiences, the two formed a fast friendship and Jack Daniel soon developed one of the most recognizable whiskey brands in the world.

The story of Daniel and Green’s relationship, set against the background of Tennessee during the mid-late 1800s, makes for remarkable reading and an important story. As Publishers Weekly said in a review: “It’s a powerful portrayal of a largely hidden American history.”

In addition to examining the life of Nearest Green, Love & Whiskey also chronicles Weaver’s own journey in the industry. Fawn Weaver had a difficult childhood and adolescence, dealing with homelessness and suicide attempts. Today, however, Weaver owns the top-selling Black-owned whiskey brand in the world, with the company now worth $1.1 billion, according to Forbes

Uncle Nearest Premium Whiskey is also the producer of multi-award-winning whiskeys, crafted in honor of Nearest Green’s legacy for both the distilling community and the Black community in Tennessee.

Speaking about Love & Whiskey, Fawn Weaver said: “ At its core, this book is about love and hope. At a moment in America’s history, where we’re all searching for those four-letter words, Love & Whiskey delivers that in spades.”
