Elijah Craig has unveiled Char No. 3 Cologne, a new fragrance that captures the essence of charred oak barrels used in bourbon production. The $49.99 cologne debuts as the premium American whiskey brand’s first fragrance offering, drawing inspiration from the Level 3 charred oak barrels used in every batch of Elijah Craig Bourbon.
The fragrance combines juniper berry, lavandin and orange blossom with smoky notes of nutmeg, oak barrel and birch wood.
Base notes of vanilla and cocoa complete the scent profile, which was developed to mirror the sensory elements found in the brand’s award-winning Small Batch Bourbon.
Named after Elijah Craig, known as the “Father of Bourbon” and credited with being the first distiller to char oak barrels for aging whiskey, the cologne represents a new category extension for the Heaven Hill Distillery brand.
“Elijah Craig’s pioneering approach to bourbon-making, especially the art of barrel charring, has always been about craftsmanship, depth, and character,” said Max Stefka, associate vice president of global whiskey brands at Heaven Hill, as reported by PR Newswire.
“Those same qualities naturally lend themselves to a fragrance – one that captures the spirit of our legacy through a rich, layered scent experience that feels unmistakably Elijah Craig.”
Symrise, a global fragrance company, custom formulated the cologne after studying the charred oak staves used to age Elijah Craig Bourbon. Crafting Beauty handled development and manufacturing of the product.
The cologne is available for pre-order through the brand’s website and will ship before the December holidays. Limited quantities will also be sold at the Heaven Hill Bourbon Experience visitor center in Bardstown, Kentucky.
Elijah Craig produces a portfolio including Small Batch, Straight Rye, Toasted Barrel, Barrel Proof and 18-Year-Old Single Barrel expressions. The brand has donated $500,000 to hospitality industry organizations through its Elijah Craig Old Fashioned Week initiative.
