French billionaire Olivier Goudet has acquired Wine-Searcher, the global wine price comparison and data platform, through his US investment arm GLX U.S. Inc. The purchase adds to his expanding wine portfolio, which already includes a 9% stake in Australia’s Treasury Wine Estates.

The acquisition builds on Goudet’s growing activity across the international wine sector. According to The Drinks Business, he has very quickly assembled a 9% holding in Treasury Wine Estates, Australia’s biggest wine business, and has described the stake as long-term. It gives him a significant voice in the direction of the troubled giant.

Wine-Searcher will continue to operate from its Auckland headquarters while keeping its UK office.
According to The Drinks Business, Grégory Andre, senior partner at GLX, said, “We look forward to providing the capital and strategic focus necessary to scale the business further, with a particular emphasis on expansion in the critical US market and other key international markets.” He also called Wine-Searcher “the undisputed leader in the wine data industry.”

Wine-Searcher lists 18 million offers from 35,000 retailers across 130 countries. According to the platform, it serves 60 million users and facilitates 250 million searches each year.
Goudet built his career in finance at Mars before co-founding private investment giant JAB Holdings BV. JAB controls or holds stakes in global brands such as Pret A Manger, Dr Pepper, Krispy Kreme and Panera Bread. Goudet and his family also own Château Charmail, an estate in the Haut-Médoc wine-producing region in Bordeaux, France. It is famed particularly for Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
