A new Virginia-based bourbon brand combines Kentucky whiskey with personalized barrel selection at a 121-acre historic estate where visitors can blend their own bottles.

1787 Provenance Bourbon Debuts with Award-Winning Kentucky Whiskeys

Middleburg Barrel Company has unveiled 1787 Provenance Bourbon, releasing two Kentucky-distilled expressions that have already earned recognition at the 2024 American Whiskey Masters. The 7-year straight bourbon whiskey received a Master Medal, while the 14-year expression took Gold.

The inaugural releases include 1787 Provenance Straight Bourbon Whiskey, aged 7 years at 107 proof (53.5% ABV) with a suggested retail price of $69.99. The official tasting notes describe it as “rich and vivid, layered with baking spice, toffee, and soft tobacco.” The premium offering, 1787 Provenance 14-Year Straight Bourbon Whiskey at 122 proof (61.1% ABV), retails for $259.99. Official tasting notes characterize it as “bold and viscous, with Luxardo cherry, brown sugar, cracked pepper, and a long, complex finish.”

Principal Whiskeymaker Jay West, a nationally recognized critic at Whiskey Raiders, personally selects each barrel. West built his reputation reviewing thousands of whiskeys before transitioning from evaluation to creation. The barrels rest in newly built rickhouses on the Provenance Estate property in Middleburg, Virginia.

Virginia Estate Offers Hands-On 1787 Provenance Bourbon Experience

The 121-acre Provenance Estate distinguishes itself by offering visitors an immersive bourbon experience. Guests can tour the historic property, taste from barrels aging on site, and select their own bourbon through a hands-on “thieving” process under expert guidance. Each visitor leaves with a custom-labeled bottle.

The estate houses more than 2,000 aging barrels, and entire barrels are available for purchase. Founder Viyas Sundaram, who has successfully exited four multi-million dollar companies, brings experience from co-founding The Bourbon Concierge, a retailer specializing in rare whiskey sourcing.

“Provenance is about honoring the past while shaping bourbon’s future. We built this brand to showcase how exceptional barrels and thoughtful blending can create whiskeys that stand with the very best,” said Sundaram.

“Today’s consumers are more thoughtful about what they choose to drink, and Provenance is designed for that mindset; it’s an invitation to experience bourbon in a way that’s immersive, personal, and meant to be savored with intention. My vision has always been to preserve history while building something new — and with Provenance, we’re doing exactly that.”

Provenance Bourbon is now available online at The Bourbon Concierge (BourbonConcierge.com) and select retailers in the Washington, D.C., Virginia, and Maryland region, including Verified Wines and Shared Pour.
