Whiskey Cocktail Hour, Halloween Edition: Poison Apple Punch

I love Halloween. It’s a holiday where you can let your imagination run away with you. As a kid, I always looked forward to running around the neighborhood collecting candy that I would then binge-eat over a 24 hour period. Sweet tooth much?

These days, I’m over the candy part, but I still look forward to watching kids collect their sweetened treasures and gleefully skip to the next house, wondering what bounty the generous inhabitants might bestow upon them. I love seeing the creativity that they (or more likely their parents) put into their costumes. I don’t get dressed up for Halloween very often, as admittedly I’m more of an old lady these days and don’t like putting in all the effort. But I do love to create fun cocktails for the occasion.

This year we’ll be staying in and giving out candy to kids, but we’ll be sipping on this falltastic, easy-to-make punch. It’s super easy to throw together before company comes over, and then you just add ice to it once guests arrive.

I kept the styling of this a bit low-key. Mostly because we moved from NYC to Portland this year, and we tossed a lot of our holiday stuff so that we wouldn’t have to drag it across the country with us. But if you wanted to make it more spooky, you could throw it in a creepy bowl, or add some dry ice in another bowl under your punch bowl. You’re creative, I’m sure you’ll make it look fab!

For this recipe I wanted to keep the fall flavors really present. I used spiced rum, a ginger liqueur, and a liqueur that’s based on a traditional Swedish holiday drink called Glögg. The Glögg has notes of cinnamon, cardamom, and clove, all delicious flavors I associate with fall. They all go incredibly well with apple cider.

The rye helps with the added spice factor and has more of a backbone to stand up to everything going on with the other flavors. You could also serve this one at Thanksgiving as a little something special instead of wine. Either way, it’s an easy one to make and sure to be a crowd pleaser.

Poison Apple Punch

  • 8 cups Apple Cider
  • 1 cup Spiced Rum
  • 1 cup Rye Whiskey
  • ½ cup Ginger Liqueur
  • ½ cup Geijer Glögg
  • 1 sliced Apple
  • 1 sliced Lemon
  • 4 sticks Cinnamon

Instructions: Combine all ingredients in a punch bowl and add lots of ice. Stir until the punch cools slightly (about a minute) and serve an apple slice and a cinnamon stick.

*Side note: The Glögg may be hard to find, depending on where you live. If you have trouble getting your hands on some, you can make a DIY version at home by making 1 cup of simple syrup infused with cinnamon, clove, and cardamom, and then adding 2 cups of vodka.
