With American Single Malt now formally ratified by the TTB, the category has moved from emerging curiosity to defined identity. Made from 100% malted barley, distilled at a single US distillery, and matured in oak casks no larger than 700 litres, the style now has legal clarity.
Within that framework, “small batch” highlights something different from single cask intensity. It reflects careful blending of a limited number of barrels to shape a house style. It is where distilleries refine identity rather than showcase a single maturation moment.
At the World Whiskies Awards America 2026, three distilleries stood out: The Notch Nantucket 15 Years Old took the Category Champion title in the 13 to 20 Years bracket, while Balcones Mirador Eclipse and Irene Tan Spirits Cigar Malt led their respective divisions.

Category Champion – Best American Small Batch Single Malt (13 to 20 Years)
The Notch Nantucket 15 Years Old
Tasting Notes: Sherry cask aromas, stewed and dried fruit, dark chocolate, vanilla, honey, coconut, spice
Find Your Next Bottle: $500
Produced by Triple Eight Distillery on Nantucket Island, The Notch 15 Years Old reflects heritage in both barley and place. The whiskey is made from 100% Maris Otter malt, a barley cross-bred in 1966 and long prized in British brewing for its distinctive flavour.
The grain is milled, mashed, and fermented at Cisco Brewers before being distilled twice through an Arnold Holstein hybrid pot still. Bottled at 96 proof, or 48% ABV, the whiskey matures in a maritime climate shaped by ocean air and seasonal swings.
Here, the focus is not on heavy finishing or experimental yeast. It is on barley quality, coastal maturation, and extended aging. The result is an American single malt rooted in tradition yet shaped by geography.
Category Winner – Best American Small Batch Single Malt (No Age Statement)
Balcones Mirador Eclipse
Tasting Notes: Pressed flowers, clover hay, mango meringue, pineapple gumdrops, almond biscotti, honeydew rind, lemon custard, white chocolate raspberry tart, guava pound cake, prairie sage, dried thyme, honeyed jasmine tea
Find Your Next Bottle: $94
Balcones Mirador Eclipse demonstrates how fermentation can redefine flavour before maturation. Built historically around Golden Promise malt, Mirador is known for showcasing grain nuance through long, open fermentations and double-batch copper pot distillation.
For Eclipse, Balcones introduced dual wine yeasts, a red wine and a rosé strain, alongside its house malt whisky yeast. The result is an American single malt that leans into blush red berry and fruits-of-the-forest notes not typically associated with the style.
Aged four to five years in a mix of first, second, and third-fill bourbon casks, Mirador Eclipse balances fruit, grain, and texture. It is yeast-driven innovation rather than oak-driven spectacle.
Category Winner – Best American Small Batch Single Malt (12 Years & Under)
Irene Tan Spirits Cigar Malt
Tasting Notes: Dark fruit, tobacco, chewy fuit, wood smoked barley
Find Your Next Bottle: $129
Cigar Malt is a collaboration between master blender Irene Tan and Andalusia Whiskey Co. Tan is known for her expertise in single barrel selection and runs both Canterbury Liquors and Whisky Mentors Consulting. Her releases are extremely limited and highly sought after.
This expression blends two American single malts. One matured for approximately 3.2 years in toasted new American oak. The other was aged in used Pedro Ximénez sherry casks. The result is designed specifically for cigar pairing, balancing sweetness, oak depth, and sherry richness.
Distribution is intentionally narrow, reinforcing its boutique character. Here, small batch is not about scale. It is about curatorial precision.
Small Batch, Broad Identity
These three winners illustrate the range within American small batch single malt. The Notch emphasises heritage barley and maritime aging. Balcones pushes yeast experimentation and fruit expression. Irene Tan’s collaboration showcases blending as selection and curation.
Now that American Single Malt is formally defined, innovation happens within clearer boundaries. Small batch production reveals how each distillery chooses to express barley, fermentation, climate, and oak.
