Single cask single malt is one of the purest expressions of distillery character. By definition, it must be made from 100% malted barley at one distillery and bottled from a single individual cask. There is no blending across barrels to soften edges or standardise profile. What you taste is the distillery’s spirit shaped by one specific maturation story.
At the World Whiskies Awards America 2026, two very different interpretations of American single malt claimed top honours. Hinterhaus Distilling’s Singularity secured the Category Champion title in the 12 Years & Under bracket. Cedar Ridge Distillery’s QuintEssential Single Cask Series – Peated Malt in Amontillado Sherry took the No Age Statement award.
Both highlight how confidently American malt producers are working with oak, smoke, and provenance.

Hinterhaus Distilling American Single Malt “Singularity”
Tasting Notes: Cherry, toffee, cereal
Find Your Next Bottle: $102.99
Hinterhaus Distilling operates in Arnold, California, drawing on Sierra Nevada water and high-elevation climate to shape its spirit. Singularity represents the distillery’s most illustrative small batch work, designed to showcase both raw malt character and layered maturation.
The batch listing states the malt bill as barley from Admiral Maltings in California and Great Western Malting in Washington. Open fermentation captures environmental nuance before distillation.
Maturation unfolds across multiple oak influences. The whiskey is aged in ex-American single malt American oak and new medium toast #3 char American oak before finishing in 11-year California Port French oak. Bottled at 54% ABV, non-chill filtered and without added colour, it is presented at natural strength.
The structure speaks to deliberate oak management rather than simple youth. It is a clear statement of intent from a mountain distillery focused on provenance.

Cedar Ridge Distillery The QuintEssential, Single Cask Series Peated Malt in Amontillado Sherry
Tasting Notes: Soy, plum, nuttiness, stone fruit
Find Your Next Bottle: $69.99
Cedar Ridge Distillery, based in Iowa, approaches American single malt with a different emphasis. This QuintEssential Single Cask release uses 100% peated malt, first matured in a Cedar Ridge ex-bourbon cask and then finished in an Amontillado sherry cask sourced from Spain.
The combination of peat and Amontillado introduces a layered interplay between smoke, nuttiness, and oxidative sherry character. Each cask in the series is unique, and this expression is explicitly positioned as one-of-a-kind.
Availability is limited, primarily through the distillery, select Iowa retailers, and online channels. As a single cask release, it is less about standardisation and more about capturing a specific moment in maturation.
American Malt, Defined on Its Own Terms
American single malt is coming into its own, experimenting with barley sourcing, oak selection, finishing techniques, and regional identity, and this is shown in single cask format.
In single casks, there is nowhere to hide. And in 2026, American malt distillers appear increasingly comfortable standing on their own terms.
