In American whiskey, the word “blended” still carries baggage. For some drinkers, it suggests neutral grain spirit or entry-level mixing whiskey. But that assumption misses an important distinction. Under US regulations, blended whiskey must contain at least 20% straight whiskey, and a “blend of straight whiskeys” contains no neutral grain spirits at all.
The World Whiskies Awards America 2026 recognised two limited releases that showcase blending as deliberate craft rather than compromise. Old Elk’s Cigar Punch Cut took the Category Champion title in the 12 Years & Under bracket, while Knob Creek Bourbon x Rye secured the No Age Statement division.
Both prove that blending in American whiskey can be bold, precise, and premium.
Category Champion – Best American Blended Limited Release (12 Years & Under)
Old Elk Cigar Punch Cut
Tasting Notes: Graham cracker, honeycomb, cedar, cherry
Find Your Next Bottle: $130
Old Elk Cigar Punch Cut is positioned as the “best of the best” from the distillery’s cask finish program. Inspired by the punch cut style of cigar cutting, the concept centres on concentrating and harmonising bold flavours.
The blend combines four finished straight whiskeys: an 8-year high malt bourbon finished four months in Armagnac casks, a 7-year high malt bourbon finished six months in Oloroso Sherry, a 6-year wheat whiskey finished eight months in tawny port, and another 6-year wheat whiskey finished between five months and one year in Sauternes.
There are no neutral grain spirits here. This is a blend of straight whiskeys layered with multiple European cask influences. The result is structured, rich, and clearly built for premium pairing rather than casual sipping.
Category Winner – Best American Blended Limited Release (No Age Statement)
Knob Creek Bourbon x Rye Kentucky Blended Straight Whiskey
Tasting Notes: Brown sweets, fruitiness, black pepper, maple, vanilla, nuttiness, baking spice
Find Your Next Bottle: $38
Knob Creek Bourbon x Rye takes a more classic approach to blending. It is a blend of straight whiskeys only, composed of 30% 9-year-old Kentucky straight bourbon and 70% 7-year-old Kentucky straight rye. Bottled at 113 proof, it has structure and intensity.
Here, the blending objective is clarity rather than finishing complexity. Bourbon sweetness and vanilla provide a foundation, while the rye component drives spice and backbone.
Produced under the Beam umbrella, Knob Creek demonstrates how an established Kentucky house can use blending to create a distinct limited release without stepping outside traditional parameters.
Blending Without Apology
These two winners challenge the lingering stigma around blended American whiskey. Old Elk’s Cigar Punch Cut shows how finishing and blending can build luxury and depth. Knob Creek’s Bourbon x Rye proves that even within straight whiskey regulations, blending remains a powerful tool.
Blending is not a shortcut. It is selection, proportion, and restraint.
