The Best German Whiskies From The Excellence of Whisky Awards 2026

Which German whiskies were judged best at The Excellence of Whisky awards in Hamburg this April?

The Excellence of Whisky initiative was initiated in 2023 by Heinfried Tacke, former Editor-in Chief of Der Whisky Botschafter and founder of Der Whisky Guide Germany. As the initiative is a craft growing community in Germany, it will take time to get into the German DNA of this vast country with 16 states.

Taste entries are blind-tasted by an expert panel of judges, including people from hospitality, retail, media, and the drinks industry. Categorized in a gold and silver group at Whiskyplaza Bar in Hamburg-Altstadt for the second year in a row, there were a few surprises.

This year, the jury was particularly impressed by the whiskies submitted by young distilleries that operate like small-scale producers. They were even more surprised that older aging and longer maturation did not necessarily lead to better whiskies.
