Whether you’re a seasoned sipper or trying to avoid secondary market markup, here are five international-friendly bottles worth your attention.
Blanton’s Single Barrel is a cult favorite, but with rising prices and patchy availability, fans are hunting for credible alternatives.
Luckily, several high-rye bourbons under $100 offer similar sweet and spicy complexity with smooth drinkability.
What Makes Blanton’s Special?
Blanton’s stands out for its balance of sweetness and spice. Made with a high-rye mash bill (around 12–15%). At 93 proof, it’s smooth and flavorful, offering just enough rye kick without overwhelming the palate. It’s this sweet and spicy profile that keeps it in high demand. Along with a rather fancy-looking bottle and a fascinating history that features bourbon icons such as Elmer T. Lee and, of course, Albert Bacon Blanton.
Its standing is again bolstered by its status as the first single barrel bourbon marketed in the United States.
However, Blanton’s is also well-known for its rarity and rising prices. It remains particularly difficult to get hold of in the United States.
Whilst many bourbon lovers wish to collect Blanton’s to complete the vertical of horse bottle stoppers, an equal number just want to sample the bourbon for themselves.
So, this article is not to say “cease your hunt for Blanton’s”. If it is an aim for you, then keep chasing. However, the whiskeys below will provide the tastiness and complexity that Blanton’s is known for without the burgeoning price tag. So, you can keep sipping on something wonderful whilst you continue your search.
Four Roses Single Barrel – The High Rye Classic
If you’re chasing the spice in Blanton’s, Four Roses Single Barrel delivers in spades. Its mash bill features a hefty 35% rye, more than double what you’ll find in many bourbons, giving it a bold, peppery edge.
Flavors of honeyed caramel, ripe stone fruit, and vanilla soften the spice, while toasted oak and light brown sugar add depth. At 100 proof, it’s rich but smooth, with a bright, balanced finish. It is no secret that I am a big fan of Four Roses, and the single barrel offering is a big part of that.
Often priced around $50, it’s widely available and consistently excellent, making it one of the best-value single barrels on the market.
Bulleit Bourbon – Bold Spice, Everyday Price
Bulleit is one of the boldest bourbons in its class, thanks to a mash bill that pushes rye up to 28%. That spice shows up immediately, think black pepper, oak, and cinnamon, balanced by sweet notes of caramel, toffee, and a hint of orange zest.
It’s bottled at 90 proof and drinks clean, with a dry finish lifted by touches of butterscotch and mint.
At around $30 a bottle, Bulleit is both affordable and globally available, making it an easy high-rye alternative when Blanton’s is off the shelf.
Basil Hayden – Light, Spicy, and Approachable
For a gentler take on the high-rye style, Basil Hayden’s offers a smooth and approachable pour. Made with 27% rye, it delivers soft spice, cinnamon, oak, and a touch of heat that is balanced by caramel, vanilla, and dried fruit.
At just 80 proof, it’s lighter than most bourbons on this list, but still holds its flavor with a warm, sweet, and spicy finish.
Priced around $45/$50 and widely distributed, it’s an easy step up for drinkers looking for something smoother than Blanton’s but still rye forward.
1792 Small Batch – Big Flavor, Small Price
1792 Small Batch leans into boldness, offering a punchy mix of rye spice and classic bourbon sweetness. Though the mash bill isn’t disclosed, it’s marketed as high rye, which is estimated between 15–25%.
Black pepper and baking spices hit up front, followed by layers of vanilla, caramel, and a touch of dark fruit. It’s full-flavored and assertive, but still balanced enough to sip easily.
Often found for $30/$40, 1792 is a standout value and a strong Blanton’s alternative for those who like their bourbon with a bit more bite.
Wild Turkey Rare Breed – Barrel Proof, Blanton’s DNA
Rare Breed brings the sweet and spicy balance of Blanton’s but turns up the volume. Made with a medium rye mash bill (13%) and bottled at barrel proof, usually around 112/116, it’s rich, intense, and unapologetically bold.
Expect a wave of caramel, maple syrup, and candied citrus peel, backed by black pepper, toasted oak, and leather. Despite the high ABV, it remains smooth and layered, with a long, warming finish.
At $50/$65, Rare Breed is a top-tier value for a cask-strength bourbon and is widely available across global markets.
Why These Alternatives Work
Each of these bourbons captures what makes Blanton’s so appealing: a high rye mash bill, a sweet and spicy flavor profile, and smooth drinkability. Some lean bolder (Rare Breed, 1792), others more refined (Basil Hayden’s, Four Roses), but all strike a familiar balance of caramel sweetness and rye-driven spice.
They’re also easier to find, more affordable, each under $100, and offer consistent quality without the collector’s markup. So whether Blanton’s is sold out or just stretching your budget, these bottles deliver the character you’re after, without compromise.
