For some time now, as a member of the Ardbeg Committee, I have felt a growing sense of disappointment with the annual releases. They were either uninspiring or priced out of consideration. So when news of a core range, 10-year-old cask strength expression broke, it felt like the bottle we have all been waiting for.
Bottled at a hefty 61.7% ABV, this whisky, matured mostly in ex-bourbon barrels with a few “experimental” casks, promises a pure, unadulterated Ardbeg experience. The question is, does it deliver?
On the nose, it is unmistakably Ardbeg, but with a surprising twist. While the classic iodiny smoke is present, it plays more of a supporting role. The star of the show, I must say, is a vibrant, zesty lime juice note that cuts through everything. This profound freshness is balanced by classic bourbon cask influences of vanilla and caramel, alongside a complex, culinary spiciness.

READ THE STORYI found intriguing notes of cumin, red chili powder, and even a weighty sesame oil aroma, creating a profile that is both intense and wonderfully inviting.
While the nose has its subtleties, the palate is anything but. This is not a gentle whisky. It opens with a massive wave of coastal notes: camphor, samphire, and briny seaweed, followed by a powerful hit of sea salt.
The smoke profile reminds me of Ardbeg Uigeadail, with its distinctive blend of earthy peat and a smoked pistachio and toffee sweetness. It is a classic, powerful Islay profile that drives forward with tar rope and the unmistakable scent of a storm-battered beach.
The finish is long and satisfying, as that sweetness makes a welcome return. Notes of dark chocolate, toffee, and that smoked pistachio character cling to the taste buds, refusing to leave. In all honesty, this is the Ardbeg many of us have wanted for years.
It delivers on every front, offering complexity, power, and that core distillery character. At a retail price of around £75, I also find it reasonably priced, especially given the brand’s recent history of overcharging. It is a truly solid, impressive release.
The Ardbeg 10 Cask Strength is a superb return to form. It’s a powerful, complex, and deeply satisfying dram that reminds me why I fell in love with this distillery in the first place. This bottle does everything you would want it to do, and then a little bit more. Is this the release that will define Ardbeg for a new generation of drinkers?
