Amrut Peated Cask Strength is made from Scottish peated barley at about 23 ppm, a moderate but noticeable level of smoke. It is distilled and matured in Bangalore, then aged in new and ex-bourbon American oak. While Amrut does not state an age, typical maturation is around 4 to 5 years, accelerated by India’s tropical climate. It is bottled at a bold 62.8% ABV, non-chill filtered, and without added color.
Amrut Distilleries was founded in 1948 in Bangalore. It was among the first to produce single malt in India. The heat and dryness there mean whisky matures faster. One year in India is often considered equivalent to three years in Scotland. Amrut’s bold approach transformed global perceptions of Indian whisky.
This expression continues a tradition of acclaim. Its 2025 World Whiskies Award reinforces the global respect it has already earned among enthusiasts and critics.
2. Hogback Peated Smoke Single Malt Whiskey (USA)

Hogback Peated Smoke is made entirely from Scottish-grown barley that was peated with smoke from peat bogs in Scotland near founder Graeme Wallace’s birthplace. That gives it a strong and distinctive smoky character. The whiskey matures for at least 3 years in virgin American oak casks, which contribute bold vanilla, spice, and a caramel note. It is bottled at 50 % ABV (100 proof). It is non-chill filtered and carries no added color.
Hogback Distillery was launched in 2017 by Graeme Wallace, a whisky writer from Scotland who moved to Colorado to start an independent distillery with a Scottish soul and an American twist. The distillery’s name comes from Colorado’s ridges, and its production combines Scottish ingredients with local maturation.
This expression earns its reputation. Its win as Best American Single Malt Whiskey in 2025 is impressive for such a young distillery. It reflects the dedication to craft, the bold mash bill and strong maturation style.
3. Ardbeg 5 Year Old Wee Beastie (Scotland)

Ardbeg Wee Beastie is the youngest whisky in the distillery’s core range. It matures for 5 years in a mix of ex-bourbon casks and Oloroso sherry butts. The malted barley is peated to around 50–55 ppm, one of the highest levels in Scotch whisky. That level of peat gives Wee Beastie its punchy and smoky style. Bottled at 47.4% ABV, it is non-chill filtered and free of added color.
Ardbeg Distillery was founded in 1815 on the island of Islay. It is known worldwide for its intensely smoky single malts. The brand has a loyal following and has won multiple “World Distillery of the Year” awards. Wee Beastie launched in 2020 as a permanent release aimed at showcasing Ardbeg’s raw peat power in a youthful form.
Its 2023 gold medal at the International Whisky Competition shows that age is not the only measure of quality. Even at five years old, Wee Beastie holds its own against older and more established competitors.
4. Wire Works Islay Peat Finish (Peated Quarter Cask) (England)

Wire Works Islay Peat Finish is a single cask release from White Peak Distillery in Derbyshire. The whisky first matured in first-fill ex-Heaven Hill bourbon barrels. It was then finished in a 125-liter Islay quarter cask that previously held heavily peated whisky.
White Peak uses lightly peated malt for its base spirit, so the Islay cask finish adds a bolder, maritime style of smoke. Bottled at 54.9% ABV, it is cask strength, non-chill filtered, and natural color. Only 204 bottles were produced, sold exclusively at the distillery.
White Peak Distillery was founded in 2016 and is the first full-scale single malt distillery in Derbyshire. Its Wire Works series is named after the historic wire factory where the distillery now operates. White Peak is known for small-batch releases, experimental cask finishes, and a balance of local character with broader whisky influences.
The Islay Peat Finish’s gold category win in 2025 highlights how far English whisky has come in a short time. It is a strong example of how thoughtful cask selection can create depth in a limited-edition release.
5. Isle of Raasay Dùn Cana – Sherry Quarter Cask (Second Edition) (Scotland)

The Dùn Cana Second Edition combines peated and unpeated spirit in a style unique to Isle of Raasay Distillery. The barley is peated at about 48–52 ppm during malting, but the finished whisky has a gentler smoke of around 6 ppm.
The spirit first matures in ex-American rye whiskey casks from Woodford Reserve. It then spends about six months in 125-liter Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso sherry quarter casks. This two-stage maturation balances sherry sweetness, peppery spice, and subtle smoke. Bottled at 52% ABV, it is non-chill filtered and natural color.
Isle of Raasay Distillery opened in 2017 as the island’s first legal distillery. It produces small-batch whisky using a mix of local innovation and diverse cask types. The Dùn Cana series is an annual release that changes slightly each year, giving collectors and fans a new twist while keeping the core style intact.
The 2025 gold category win builds on the acclaim earned by the First Edition, which was named “The World’s Best Whisky 2024” by Forbes.
