Whiskey Review: Lost Lantern Mountain Meadow St. George Spirits Single Malt

Tasting Notes:

About:
American single malt aged four years and sourced from a pioneer California craft distillery; bottled at 107 proof; non-chill-filtered and of natural coloring; $150.
Appearance:
Used oak showcases the light golden color of this whisky in glass, highlighted by thick legs and excellent viscosity.
Nose:
This starts with warm, bright, buttery notes on the nose, with hints of maple, apricot, grass after a spring rain, caramel apple, and a subtle baked bread.
Palate:
The taste here is multidimensional, which is not surprising given St. George’s long history as an American single malt maker. Some flavors include baked bread, banana, apricot, vanilla, caramel, creme brûlée, apple pie, and salted butter.
Finish:
The finish is moderate and to the point, fading relatively quickly in the forefront but still having a lingering touch that’s gentle and easy.
Comments:
Not surprisingly, this is quite a complex American single malt worthy of your attention. The combination of St. George’s history in space and the skills of the Lost Lantern team has made this one a winner.

American independent bottlers are a new and emerging category on the domestic whiskey scene. Mirroring practices of similar outfits in Scotland, this niche of producers seeks out high-quality expressions from distilleries across the United States, making them single bottlings or blended whiskeys. They also tend to believe in transparency, putting alongside their brand the name of the distillery, where the whiskey came from, and as much other relevant information as possible.

One of the leaders of this movement is Lost Lantern, who is out of Vermont. Founded by Nora Ganley-Roper and Adam Polonski, they were recently named Independent Bottler of the Year at the global Icons of Whisky Awards in London. They take very seriously where they source from and the transparency of information, regularly releasing blended and single distillery expressions with unique identities.

This past November, they offered four new expressions as part of their Lost Lantern Winter 2023 Collection. Crafted “specifically to be enjoyed during the coldest season of the year,” the one I’m reviewing today is Lost Lantern Mountain Meadow St. George Spirits Single Malt. This blend of “four truly unique casks” was sourced from St. George Spirits out of California. It has a four-year age statement, with its component barrels ranging from 4 years and six months to 7 years and five months.

Bottled at 107 proof, 600 bottles of this single malt were produced by Lost Lantern. It is priced at $150 and is both non-chill-filtered and of natural coloring.
