Tasting Notes

About:

A 16-Year-Old single malt from Speyside’s Tormore distillery, part of Elixir Distillers newly launched Tormore core range of whiskies for 2026. Tormore’s 16-Year-Old expression focuses on re-racking and finishing in sherry casks; a ratio of 60% American oak cream sherry casks, and 40% French oak Oloroso butts. Natural colour and non-chill filtered, bottled at 46.8% ABV.
Appearance:
Light Copper
Nose:
Aromas of cinnamon spice and buttery pastries, leading into dried fruits, dates and fudge.
Palate:
Sweet and smooth on the palate, with notes of buttery pastries, demerara sugar and fudge, leading into dried fruits including raisins and sultanas. There’s also a touch of jammy blueberries, before a shift into warming oak spice.
Finish:
Medium-length finish, with dried fruits and fudge lingering before a final warming flourish of oak.
Comments:
The Tormore 16-Year-Old displays some quite gentle sherry cask influence, although the expression is noticeably darker than the 12-Year-Old or Timeless expressions. There are some clear notes of dried fruits, but the gentle cask influence allows the spirit’s character and sweeter notes to shine through. Tormore hasn’t stated how long the spirit was finished in the different types of sherry casks. An easy drinking and accessible sherried whisky, given the popularity of sherry cask whisky and the price point for a 16-year age statement, I think this expression will really promote and make a name for the Tormore brand.
