60_Year_Old-bigWhat could very well be one of the cheapest 60-year-old Scotch whiskies ever brought to market has just been released by Master of Malt, an outfit known to many for its vast online whiskey web store. It also is an independent bottler, delving into the archives of unnamed distilleries to bottle under its own label special finds.

The Master of Malt 60 Year Old Speyside, pricing for around $1675 a bottle, is said to herald from a famous “Speyside distillery.” By not revealing its name, it is thus possible to offer it “a mere fraction of the price” that would otherwise be possible. When you consider Diageo’s Brora 40 Year Old is going for over $11,000 a bottle, that’s a pretty darn good savings indeed!

The 60 year old joins under bottlings under Master of Malt’s Secret Bottlings Series, which to date has also included some rather venerable 30, 40 and 50 year old offerings. Tastings notes from those behind this whisky indicate that on the nose there’s “beautiful malt to the fore, with a sublime backing of nutmeg, cocoa butter and raisin.” This appears on the palate “delivering a touch of chocolate and ground allspice…quite tropical too – there’s a note of coconut, perhaps mango,” finishing “with pipe tobacco, molasses and dried herbs.”

If you are not quite ready to drop what to some will be that $1000+ bargain price tag, you can also get hold of a small 30 ml sample for around $90.
