Glenfiddich 19-Year-Old Scotch Gets Bourbon Cask Aging Treatment

Glenfiddich-Age-of-Discovery-Bourbon-Cask-ReserveThe Glenfiddich Distillery, owned by William Grant & Sons, is another Speyside single malt style producer like Balvenie. For one of its latest releases, it looked overseas to our bourbon industry for some inspiration, unveiling a 19-year-old Scotch that’s been aged in American bourbon casks.

Glenfiddich Age of Discovery Bourbon Cask Reserve, according to the distillery, prices for around $150. The bourbon barrels it aged in were perviously only used once, though there’s no mention of what American distillery they resided at prior. Still, it is a toast to a time honored tradition of the domestic whiskey industry providing its Scottish cousin used barrels to mature Scotch in.

Bottled at 40% alcohol by volume, the flavor profile is described as having a nose that

consists of toffee and deep citrus notes, balanced by dry, faint smoky notes of oak. The taste is complex and layered with vanilla, fine leather and tobacco, which develops a sweet, velvety mouth feel enhanced by spicy hints of cardamom and nutmeg, which fade slowly into a warm and long finish.

The Bourbon Cask Reserve comes in interesting packaging, which is adorned with illustrations that “represent the meandering Mississippi River with each panel displaying a landmark along the casks’ expedition from America to Scotland.”
