Pineapple is a divisive fruit, from cake, to pizza, to frozen rum drinks, the pineapple’s place in the culinary world is not obvious.
The South American fruit has was once a status symbol for only the elite in Victorian era England. Times change and so too did the status of the pineapple. Today cultivation has made the pineapple an easy dessert or cocktail garnish.
Buchanan’s Blended Scotch whisky, for which this pineapple flavored whisky I’m reviewing comes from, has a long history dating back to 1884. Named for whisky entrepreneur James Buchanan, Buchanan’s Whisky is a blended Scotch designed to optimize smooth and drinkable profiles. Blended Scotch is not as expensive as its single malt sibling, but for approachability and price it’s very hard to turn down a glass of a good blended Scotch.
Buchanan’s has a strong presence in many parts of the world, including in Latin American communities. This is where pineapple enters the scene. As noted by the brand at the time of this product’s release, “for years, Buchanan’s has been welcomed into the culture and celebrations of the Hispanic American community, often mixed with pineapple juice, resulting in one of our most popular serves, the Buchanita, which helped inspire us to create this new blended whisky flavor.

This whisky could become the next great pizza debate. This whisky’s place in the pantheon of good or bad decisions could have no middle ground. Invariably some individuals may find this to be their new favorite, while others wouldn’t sully their drainpipes with its presence.
Tasting Notes: Buchanan’s Pineapple

Appearance: Apple Juice
Nose: Pineapple gummy bears. There is a hint of alcohol, but this is overwhelmingly pineapple gummy candy.
Taste: This tastes like a liquified pineapple gummy candy mixed with the faintest hint of peat smoke and oak. The mouth feel is syrupy, almost medicinal. The finish is cloying to the mouth and the finish is a lingering corn syrup sugar candy.
