Whiskey Review: Watertown Coconut Whiskey

Tasting Notes:

About:
73 proof (36.5% ABV); 750ml bottle; $34.99 msrp.
Appearance:
This whiskey is an extremely light color, just a very light amber.
Nose:
This whiskey has a very sweet and oaky scent. It does not have the normal scent associated with most whiskey. There is definitely a hint of coconut.
Palate:
This whiskey is very sweet, with a strong touch of honey, followed by the flavor of coconut. It is very smooth, and light.
Finish:
Comments:
I honestly had a bit of a hard time with this one. Being that it doesn’t have a ‘normal’ whiskey scent at all, it was hard to pick out the other possible scents. Also, it was very sweet, almost like it is a mixed drink (which I guess to an extent it already is). I am not really a fan of coconut, but generally that is the texture of actual coconut pieces, as opposed to the flavor. rnrnSo, as far as the flavor goes, this is a fairly good drink, and would definitely be good in some tropical mixers. I wouldn’t suggest drinking this straight for most whiskey drinkers. However, if you like sweet drinks, tropical drinks, and/or coconut, then this would be a great whiskey for you, even if you don’t normally like whiskey.

Hailing from Watertown, Massachusetts, Mikey Bortone has a very diverse background. From once owning a chimney and masonry company, managing a bar/restaurant, to being in commercials for Levi’s, American Express, and Progressive Auto, as well as writing and directing a couple of short films, Bortone has already done many things in his life.

He is likely best known as a contestant on Survivor: Micronesia, although he was voted off at the second tribal council that season. But now, Bortone has taken on a new career path; bottling whiskey.

It all happened, it is said, by accident while watching football one Sunday. While drinking whiskey, he decided he needed some hydration, so he grabbed a bottle of coconut water. Downing the whiskey and the coconut water, he decided to try the two together. And thus, Watertown Whiskey was born.

While named for his hometown of Watertown, Massachusetts, Watertown Whiskey is actually located in Manhattan Beach, California. Co-founded with his longtime friends Steve Cicarelli and Mark O’Donnell, they saw an opportunity to create something unique that they think will become a staple in the whiskey world.

From Bortone himself, “We developed a unique blend of traditional rye and revitalizing coconut flavors to create a taste of paradise that you can enjoy with friends or family, whether you’re out at an event or having a nightcap at home. This will become every whiskey drinker’s go-to brand.”

Their focus is on being a low-sugar whiskey, and not compromising on flavor, while doing their best to use locally sourced ingredients.
