Whiskey Review: Old Forester 117 Series Scotch Cask Finish

Tasting Notes:

About:
Bourbon finished in Scotch casks; bottled at 93 proof; priced at $59.99.
Appearance:
There’s some splendid, rich golden-brown in this glass, showcasing an established leg structure and solid viscosity.
Nose:
Rich, warm bourbon notes of oak and vanilla waft into my nose, carrying some hints of brown sugar, apricot, cherry jam, nut butter, and banana pudding.
Palate:
This opens nicely on my tongue, delivering rich vanilla, apricot, dark chocolate, creme brulee, apple cider, and warm toffee. There are also some back notes of blackberry.
Finish:
It slides down nicely, a little sweet, as it heads into the deep part of my throat. It is of a good length, leaving a pleasant aftertaste.
Comments:
Old Forester 117 Series Scotch Cask Finish is a solid cask-finished bourbon and another strong offering from Old Forester. It didn’t blow me away, but I find it worth having a bottle at home if you can acquire one.

Old Forester is Brown-Forman’s founding brand, established in 1870 by George Garvin Brown. Since then, it has remained a tentpole in this company, existing alongside other Brown-Forman brands such as Jack Daniel’s and Woodford Reserve. Outside of the core Old Forester expressions, some different variants, including the 117 Series, exist that focus on Old Forester’s venerable status and some out-of-the-box thinking.

The latest offering from the 117 Series, which I’m reviewing today, is the Old Forester 117 Series Scotch Cask Finish. Crafted in honor of Brown’s Scottish heritage, it uses sherry and wine barrels sourced and matured from the protected Speyside region around the River Spey in northeastern Scotland.

“This release is special to the family history our brand was built on,” said Old Forester Master Taster Melissa Rift at the time of its release. “We’ve been creating top-quality, rare and innovative expressions for 150 years, and this scotch whiskey captures our founder’s spirit in another rich and smooth liquid, which I recommend serving neat.”

This limited edition bourbon, bottled at 93 proof, is available for sale at the retail shop at Old Forester Distilling Co. and in select Kentucky stores (likely also online). It is priced at $59.99.
