Whiskey Review: Bardstown Bourbon Goose Island Collaborative Series

Tasting Notes:

About:
100 proof (50% ABV); 750ml; MSRP $159.99.
Appearance:
Mahogany.
Nose:
On the nose are aromas of spice, pretzel, leather, lemon zest, old wood floorboards, and naturally sweet tobacco.
Palate:
The palate offers woodsy flavors of pine, toffee, citrus, warm spice, walnuts, malt, and hints of salted caramel apple.
Finish:
Comments:
Delicious and approachably robust with a broad flavor profile and a savory long finish. It has great balance and complexity with a slightly dry, yet smooth texture. While I wasn’t crazy about the dark and bitter flavors of the Goose Island Bourbon County Stout I tasted alongside the bourbon, its barrel influence on this Bardstown bourbon expression really adds a luster and richness that provides a delicious and satisfying whiskey experience. rnrnOverall, this is a truly unique Kentucky bourbon with a compelling depth of character that offers so much to chew on.

In September of this year Bardstown Bourbon Company released Bardstown Bourbon Goose Island Collaborative Series as part of its ongoing collaborations with other alcohol-related brands.

Bottled at a cask strength of 100 proof, Bardstown Bourbon Goose Island Collaborative Series is a limited release Kentucky straight bourbon. It features a bespoke blend of six- and seven-year-old Kentucky bourbon aged for another 12 months in barrels that previously held Goose Island Bourbon County Brand Stout. These barrels were unrinsed, leaving behind fresh stout beer soaked staves for the spirit to mingle with. Once this blend is finished it’s then married with a nine-year-old Kentucky bourbon before bottling.

The brand’s official tasting notes for Bardstown Bourbon Goose Island Collaborative Series suggest aromas of dark chocolate, honey, toasted almond and vanilla cream with flavor notes of roasted malt, cacao and allspice on the palate.

Bardstown Bourbon Co. was founded in 2014 and is currently considered to own one of the most innovative whiskey distilleries in the U.S. Located in the heart of Bourbon Country, their distillery produces custom rye, whiskey and bourbon for other well-known spirits brands as part of their collaboration distilling program.

In addition to Bardstown Bourbon’s flagship Origin Series, and their Collaborative Series, they have a Discovery Series and a Fusion Series which also offer limited release bourbon expressions throughout the year.

Since 2010, Goose Island has been well known for collaborating with some of the most popular bourbons in the world to produce sought-after barrel-aged stouts. Every Black Friday, Goose Island releases their Bourbon County Brand stout in various original and limited expressions.

“Goose Island is the perennial trailblazer of craft brewing and a perfect partner for collaboration,” said Dan Callaway, VP of Product Development for Bardstown Bourbon Co., in a prepared statement. “I adore their Bourbon County Brand Stout and jumped at the opportunity to explore flavor together. This bourbon accentuates the depth of stout while maintaining beautiful fruit, malt, and honey. A true team effort!”

Bardstown Bourbon Goose Island Collaborative Series is a limited edition expression release of 3,500 9L cases which was made available for purchase at the Bardstown Bourbon Co, gift shop, online at Seelbachs.com, and at retailers in 24 states.
