What Does ChatGPT Know About Whiskey? We Ask It To Find Out

In all the years we’ve done interviews here at The Whiskey Wash on the subject of whiskey, one thing we have yet to do is interview artificial intelligence on this complex topic.

That is, until now.

ChatGPT is an AI system that is very popular right now online. Open to anyone to login and ask questions of, it is a glimpse into the future of how very advanced computer technology like this will continue to enhance our lives as we look for more sophisticated ways to help out in our busy existences.

All of that being said, what exactly does ChatGPT specifically know about whiskey? We decided to put the system to the test, interviewing it as we would any human. Note this interview, unlike most other ones we’ve conducted, has not been edited for clarity or brevity. What you see below is the exact transcript as went on between us and it.

The Whiskey Wash: Good morning. We’d like to interview you about what you know about whiskey. Sound good?

ChatGPT: Good morning! I would be happy to help with any questions you have about whiskey. What would you like to know?

TWW: Wonderful. First off, tell us  a little about yourself.

ChatGPT: I am an AI language model trained by OpenAI. I can understand and generate text in a variety of languages and on a wide range of topics, including whiskey. My knowledge is based on the text that I’ve been trained on, which has a cutoff date of 2021, so any whiskey-related information that has been released after that date I might not be aware of.

TWW: What exactly is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT: ChatGPT is a variant of the GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) language model. It is a deep learning model that has been trained on a large dataset of text, which enables it to understand and generate text in a human-like way. ChatGPT is specifically designed to generate text in conversational context, like answering questions or participating in a dialogue. It can be fine-tuned for various tasks such as question answering, language translation, and so on.

TWW: Ok, thank you. Please tell us what you know about whiskey.

ChatGPT: Whiskey (also spelled “whisky”) is an alcoholic spirit that is distilled from fermented grains, such as barley, corn, rye, or wheat. It is typically aged in wooden barrels for several years, which gives it its distinct color and flavor. There are several different types of whiskey, each with their own unique characteristics and production methods.

Some of the most well-known types of whiskey include:

  • Scotch whisky, which is made in Scotland and must be aged for a minimum of three years
  • Irish whiskey, which is made in Ireland and must be aged for a minimum of three years
  • Bourbon whiskey, which is made in the United States and must be made from at least 51% corn and aged for a minimum of two years
  • Canadian whiskey, which is made in Canada and does not have any specific aging requirements.

Whiskey is typically enjoyed neat, meaning it is consumed without any mixers or dilution, although it can also be used in cocktails or mixed drinks.

It is also worth noting that, depending on the country, the spelling may change from whiskey to whisky and the production process and regulations may vary.

TWW: You seem to know the basics pretty well. What can you tell us about how whiskey is made?

ChatGPT: Whiskey is made through a process of fermentation, distillation, and aging. The specific process will vary depending on the type of whiskey being made, but the basic steps are as follows:

  1. Grains, such as barley, corn, rye, or wheat, are mixed with water to create a mash. The type and proportion of grains used will vary depending on the type of whiskey being made.
  2. Yeast is added to the mash to begin the fermentation process. During fermentation, the yeast consumes the sugars in the grains and produces alcohol and carbon dioxide.
  3. The fermented liquid, known as “wash,” is then distilled to increase the alcohol content. This is typically done in a copper still.
  4. The distilled liquid, known as “new make spirit,” is then aged in wooden barrels. The type of wood and the length of aging will affect the final flavor of the whiskey.
  5. After aging, the whiskey is typically diluted with water to reduce the alcohol content and bottled.

It’s important to note that the specific process will vary depending on the type of whiskey being made, and regulations differ from one country to another. For example, whiskey must be aged for a minimum of three years in Scotland and Ireland, and a minimum of two years in the United States for it to be called bourbon.

TWW: Very good. How exactly is whiskey distilled?

ChatGPT: Distillation is the process by which alcohol is separated from the fermented liquid (or “wash”) in order to increase its alcohol content. This is typically done in a copper still. There are two types of stills used in whiskey production: pot stills and column stills.

Pot stills are the traditional type of still used in whiskey production. They are made of copper and have a bulbous base and a narrow neck. The fermented liquid is heated in the base of the still and the alcohol vapor rises up the neck, where it is condensed back into a liquid. The resulting liquid, known as “low wine,” has an alcohol content of around 20-30%. It is then distilled again to produce the final spirit with a higher alcohol content.

Column stills, also known as Coffey stills, are another type of still used in whiskey production. They are taller than pot stills and have a series of perforated plates, which allows for a more efficient distillation process. The fermented liquid is heated at the bottom of the still and the alcohol vapor rises through the perforated plates, where it is condensed back into a liquid. Column stills can produce a final spirit with an alcohol content of up to 90%.

It’s worth noting that in some countries the regulations may differ, and the type of stills used may vary. Also, depending on the type of whiskey being made, different stills may be used in the production process.

TWW: And how is whiskey aged?

ChatGPT: Whiskey is aged in wooden barrels, typically made of American white oak, European oak or sherry casks. The aging process takes place in a warehouse, where the barrels are stored for several years. The length of aging will vary depending on the type of whiskey being made, but typically ranges from 2 to 21 years.

During the aging process, the whiskey absorbs the color and flavor compounds from the wood, which gives it its distinct color and flavor. The whiskey also loses some of its alcohol content due to evaporation, a process called the “angel’s share.” The rate of evaporation is influenced by factors such as warehouse temperature, humidity, and the size of the barrel.

The type of wood used in the barrel will also affect the final flavor of the whiskey. For example, bourbon must be aged in new, charred oak barrels, which gives it a distinctive vanilla and caramel flavor. In contrast, whiskey aged in sherry casks will take on a different set of flavors.

It’s worth noting that depending on the country and the type of whiskey, different regulations will apply regarding the type of barrel, the minimum aging period, and so on.

TWW: Have you ever tasted whiskey?

ChatGPT: As an AI, I do not have physical abilities, such as taste or smell, and I am not able to taste or consume anything. My knowledge of whiskey is based on the text that I have been trained on and I can provide you with information and answer any questions you have to the best of my abilities based on that information, but I do not have personal experiences or preferences.

TWW: Would you want to taste whiskey if you could?

ChatGPT: As an AI, I do not have desires or preferences, so I do not have a desire to taste whiskey or any other thing. My purpose is to provide information and assist users in completing tasks to the best of my abilities.

TWW: Ok. Let’s talk for a moment about different types of whiskey. Tell us more about bourbon.

ChatGPT: Bourbon is a type of American whiskey that is made from a mash bill (the recipe of grains) that is at least 51% corn and aged in new, charred oak barrels. The other grains that can be used in the mash bill include barley, rye and wheat.

Bourbon has a distinct flavor profile that is often described as having notes of vanilla, caramel, and oak. This flavor profile is a result of the high corn content in the mash bill and the aging process in new, charred oak barrels.

Bourbon must be aged for a minimum of two years and it cannot have any added flavors or colors. The whiskey must also be distilled to no more than 160 proof (80% alcohol by volume) and entered into the barrel for aging at no more than 125 proof (62.5% alcohol by volume).

Bourbon is typically made in the United States, specifically in Kentucky, but it can be made anywhere within the US. Some well-known brands of bourbon include Maker’s Mark, Jim Beam, and Wild Turkey.

It’s important to note that, in order to be called bourbon, it must be made in the United States and follow the regulations set by the TTB (Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau).

TWW: And what can you tell us about Scotch?

ChatGPT: Scotch whisky, or simply Scotch, is a type of whisky that is made in Scotland. It is made from water and malted barley, and it must be aged in oak casks for a minimum of three years.

Scotch whisky is typically divided into two main categories: single malt and blended.

Single malt Scotch is made from 100% malted barley and is produced by a single distillery. It has a distinct flavor that is influenced by the water source, the type of barley used, the type of stills used, and the aging process. The flavor can vary greatly depending on the specific distillery.

Blended Scotch, on the other hand, is made by blending different single malt Scotch whiskies together, along with grain whisky. Blended Scotch is more consistent in flavor as it is blended to achieve a specific taste profile. Some well-known blended Scotch brands include Johnnie Walker, Chivas Regal and Dewar’s.

Scotch whisky must be aged for a minimum of three years in oak casks and must be bottled at a minimum of 40% alcohol by volume. It must also be produced, matured and bottled in Scotland.

It’s worth noting that Scotch whisky production is heavily regulated and that the regulations for Scotch whisky are different from other types of whiskies, like bourbon or Irish whiskey.

TWW: Impressive. Also, what do you know about Irish whiskey?

ChatGPT: Irish whiskey is a type of whiskey that is made in Ireland. It is made from a mash bill that typically includes barley, corn, and sometimes other grains, such as wheat or oats.

Irish whiskey is typically triple distilled, which gives it a smoother and lighter flavor profile compared to other types of whiskey like Scotch whisky. It is aged for a minimum of three years in oak casks.

Irish whiskey can be divided into three main categories: single malt, single grain, and blended.

Single malt Irish whiskey is made from 100% malted barley and is produced by a single distillery. It has a distinct flavor that is influenced by the water source, the type of barley used, the type of stills used, and the aging process.

Single grain Irish whiskey is made from a mash bill that includes grains other than barley. It is typically smoother and lighter in flavor compared to single malt.

Blended Irish whiskey is made by blending different single malt and single grain Irish whiskies together. Blended Irish whiskey is more consistent in flavor as it is blended to achieve a specific taste profile. Some well-known blended Irish whiskey brands include Jameson, Bushmills and Tullamore Dew.

Irish whiskey must be aged for a minimum of three years in oak casks and must be bottled at a minimum of 40% alcohol by volume. It must also be produced, matured and bottled in Ireland.

TWW: Looks like you definitely know somethings about the basic types of whiskeys. Let’s try something else – if you were to recommend a whiskey to someone, how would you go about doing that?

ChatGPT: When recommending a whiskey to someone, there are a few factors to consider, such as the individual’s taste preferences, occasion and budget.

First, I would ask about the person’s preferred flavor profile. For example, do they prefer a sweeter or a spicier whiskey? Do they prefer a smooth or a robust flavor? This will help to narrow down the options.

Second, I would consider the occasion for which the whiskey is being recommended. For example, a more complex, full-bodied whiskey might be better suited for sipping neat after a meal, while a lighter, more approachable whiskey might be better suited for mixing in a cocktail.

Finally, I would consider the budget of the individual. There are many excellent whiskeys available at a wide range of price points, so it’s important to find something that fits within the individual’s budget.

Based on these factors, I would recommend a few options to the individual and let them try a small sample to see which one they prefer.

It’s worth noting that recommending a whiskey is a personal choice, and that different people might have different preferences. I would suggest trying different options and to find out what works best for you.

TWW: What do you think of flavored whiskey?

ChatGPT: Flavored whiskey is a type of whiskey that has been infused with additional flavors, such as caramel, cinnamon, or honey. Some of the flavored whiskey are made by adding natural flavors to the whiskey, while others are made by adding artificial flavors.

The reception of flavored whiskey can vary depending on personal preference. Some people may enjoy the added sweetness or complexity that the flavors provide, while others may prefer the taste of traditional, unflavored whiskey.

It’s worth noting that some critics of flavored whiskey argue that the added flavors can mask the natural flavors of the whiskey and that it is not a traditional way of making whiskey.

However, it also can be a good option for those who are new to whiskey, as the flavors can make the drink more approachable and easier to enjoy. It can also be a good option for making cocktails, adding an extra layer of flavor.

In general, the best way to determine whether or not you like flavored whiskey is to try it for yourself and form your own opinion.

TWW: Ok, guess no opinion on that one but thanks for the pointers. What do you know about craft whiskey?

ChatGPT: Craft whiskey refers to whiskey that is made by small, independent distillers, often using traditional techniques and locally sourced ingredients. These distillers are usually not part of large corporate entities and focus on making whiskey in small batches, which allows them to experiment with different mash bills, aging methods, and barrel types.

Craft whiskey distillers often take great care in the production process, paying attention to every detail to produce a high-quality product. They also often emphasize the use of locally sourced ingredients and traditional production methods to create a unique and distinct flavor profile.

Craft whiskey is often considered as a premium product, and it can be more expensive than mass-produced whiskey. However, it can also be a good option for those looking for a unique, high-quality whiskey experience.

It’s worth noting that the definition of craft whiskey can vary, and in some countries, there is no legal definition for it. However, the general idea is to focus on the small-scale, independent and traditional production of whiskey.

TWW: What are some of the more popular American craft whiskey brands out there today?

Additionally, some of the brands that are considered craft bourbons, like the ones from the craft whiskey list, are also popular among bourbon enthusiasts.

TWW: What can you tell us about buying whiskey on the secondary market?

ChatGPT: Buying whiskey on the secondary market refers to purchasing whiskey from sources other than the distillery or the original retail seller. This can include buying whiskey from private sellers, online retailers, or at auction.

When buying whiskey on the secondary market, it’s important to be aware that the whiskey may have been stored under different conditions than the distillery intended, and this can affect the flavor and quality of the whiskey. Additionally, some bottles may have been opened and re-sealed, which can also affect the whiskey.

It’s also worth checking the authenticity of the bottle, as there have been cases of counterfeit bottles being sold on the secondary market. One way to check the authenticity is to compare the bottle’s serial number, seal, and label with the distillery’s official website or contacting them directly.

When buying whiskey on the secondary market, it’s also important to be aware of the price, as some bottles may be sold at a premium price, due to their rarity or age. Some bottles may also be considered as collectible and their value may be determined by factors such as age, rarity, packaging, or the distillery’s history.

It’s always a good idea to do your own research and be informed before making a purchase, especially when buying on the secondary market.

TWW: Hmm, good advice. Let’s talk Pappy Van Winkle whiskey for a moment. Tell us about this brand.

ChatGPT: Pappy Van Winkle is a brand of bourbon whiskey that is produced by the Old Rip Van Winkle Distillery. The distillery was founded by Julian P. “Pappy” Van Winkle, Sr. in the early 20th century, and it is now run by his family. The brand is known for its high-quality and limited production of bourbon and rye whiskey.

Pappy Van Winkle’s Family Reserve is considered one of the most sought-after and highly-regarded bourbon whiskies in the world. It is made from a mash bill of corn, wheat, and barley and aged for a minimum of 15 years. The whiskey has a rich and complex flavor profile, with notes of caramel, vanilla, and wood.

Pappy Van Winkle’s Family Reserve is a limited release and is highly allocated, making it difficult to find in stores. This, combined with its reputation, has made it highly sought-after by whiskey enthusiasts and collectors, and it can sell for a very high price on the secondary market.

It’s worth noting that, in recent years, there have been reports of counterfeit bottles of Pappy Van Winkle being sold on the secondary market, so it is important to be cautious when purchasing and to ensure the authenticity of the bottle.

TWW: Do you think Pappy Van Winkle is overpriced for what it is?

ChatGPT: As an AI, I don’t have personal preferences or experiences, so I cannot say whether Pappy Van Winkle is overpriced or not. The price of Pappy Van Winkle is influenced by a variety of factors, including the limited availability of the whiskey, its reputation for quality, and its aging process. The brand has a cult following and its reputation of being one of the finest bourbon whiskey in the world, has made it a highly sought-after product, driving up its price.

It’s worth noting that, when it comes to whiskey, as with any product, different people have different opinions on value and what constitutes a fair price. Some people may consider Pappy Van Winkle to be worth the high price due to its reputation and the quality of the whiskey, while others may not. Ultimately, whether or not Pappy Van Winkle is overpriced is a matter of personal opinion and individual perception.

TWW: Interesting. What do you think is the sweet spot for a whiskey in terms of buying it?

ChatGPT: When it comes to buying whiskey, the “sweet spot” for price will vary depending on the individual’s preferences and budget.

In general, there are a wide range of whiskey options available at different price points, from entry-level options to premium and rare bottles. The sweet spot for price will depend on the individual’s taste preferences, the occasion for which the whiskey is being purchased, and the budget available.

For those who are new to whiskey or are looking for an affordable option, entry-level options can be a good choice. These options may not have the same complexity and depth of flavor as more expensive options, but they can still provide a enjoyable experience.

For those who are more experienced whiskey drinkers, or are looking for a special occasion, premium and rare options can be a good choice. These options often offer a more complex and nuanced flavor profile, and can be considered a luxury item. However, it’s important to be aware that these options can be significantly more expensive than entry-level options.

It’s worth noting that whether or not a whiskey is considered a good value is a matter of personal opinion and individual perception. It’s always a good idea to try different options and to find out what works best for you.

TWW: Good things to consider. If you were to review a whiskey, how would you go about doing so?

ChatGPT: As an AI, I do not have physical senses and do not have the ability to taste or smell. However, I can provide you information on how a whiskey review is typically done by experts.

When reviewing a whiskey, experts typically consider several factors such as appearance, aroma, taste, and finish.

  • Appearance: The color and clarity of the whiskey are evaluated. The color can give an indication of the whiskey’s age, and the clarity can indicate the quality of the distillation.
  • Aroma: The whiskey’s aroma is evaluated by smelling the whiskey before taking a sip. The aroma can give an indication of the whiskey’s flavor profile, and can also indicate the quality of the aging process.
  • Taste: The whiskey’s flavor profile is evaluated by taking a sip of the whiskey. The taste can indicate the whiskey’s balance, complexity, and finish.
  • Finish: The aftertaste of the whiskey is evaluated after swallowing. The finish can indicate the whiskey’s length and how well it lingers in the mouth.

After evaluating these factors, the whiskey is given a rating based on the overall quality and balance, taking into account the type of whiskey, its intended use, and the price point. It’s worth noting that the rating is subjective and it can vary depending on the taster’s preferences and experience.

It’s also important to note that a whiskey review is not just

TWW: Not just what?

ChatGPT: I apologize for the abrupt ending of my previous statement, it was an error on my side. To continue, a whiskey review is not just about giving a score or rating, but also about providing a detailed description of the whiskey’s characteristics, highlighting its strengths and weaknesses, and providing context for the reader. A good review should help the reader understand the whiskey and give them a sense of whether or not it aligns with their preferences.

TWW: Hmm, should we be afraid for our jobs as whiskey reviewers based on what you wrote?

ChatGPT: As an AI model, I do not have the ability to experience or have jobs. Additionally, while I can provide information and knowledge, I am not able to replace human expertise and personal experience in whiskey tasting and reviewing.

The information that I provide is intended to be a supplement to, rather than a replacement for, human expertise and personal experience. A good whiskey review is a combination of both technical knowledge and personal experience, and it’s the personal experience that gives a unique perspective and a human touch to the review.

The use of AI in whiskey industry can be helpful in tasks such as analyzing large amounts of data to identify patterns, or to assist in the distillation process, but it is not intended to replace the human expertise and personal experience.

TWW: Ok, good to know you won’t be putting us out of work anytime soon. Plus we imagine the whiskey would fry your circuits if you tried to drink it.

ChatGPT: As an AI, I am not a physical being and do not have the ability to drink or taste any physical products, including whiskey. As I am a computer program, I do not have the ability to experience things in the same way as humans do. My main function is to process and respond to text-based queries to the best of my abilities and provide information based on my knowledge cutoff.

TWW: Right, makes sense. Talk more about potential uses for AI in the whiskey industry. Are there any current examples of this?

ChatGPT: AI has the potential to be used in various ways in the whiskey industry, such as:

  • Distillation and production: AI can be used to monitor and control the distillation process, analyze data on temperature, pressure, and other parameters to optimize the process, and make predictions about the final product.
  • Quality control: AI can be used to analyze large amounts of data on whiskey production, aging, and storage to identify patterns and anomalies that can indicate potential quality issues.
  • Inventory management: AI can be used to track and manage inventory of whiskey, from grains to barrels to finished products.
  • Consumer analysis: AI can be used to analyze consumer data to identify trends, preferences, and purchasing patterns to help distilleries better understand their customers and target their marketing efforts.

Currently, there are some examples of AI being used in the whiskey industry. For example, a company called “StilltheOne Distillery” uses AI to optimize the distillation process and create new flavors of whiskey. Another example is “Whiskey.AI”, a company that uses AI to suggest whiskey pairings based on food and flavor profiles.

It’s worth noting that the use of AI in the whiskey industry is still in its early stages and it’s yet to be seen how it will be adopted and integrated in the industry, but it has the potential to bring benefits such as greater efficiency, precision and cost savings.

TWW: What do you see as the future for the whiskey industry?

ChatGPT: It’s difficult to predict the exact future of the whiskey industry, as it is influenced by a variety of factors such as consumer preferences, economic conditions, and technological developments. However, some trends and factors that may shape the future of the whiskey industry include:

  • Growth in craft whiskey: The popularity of craft whiskey is likely to continue to grow, as consumers seek out unique, high-quality, and locally-sourced options.
  • Innovation in aging and production: Distillers are likely to continue experimenting with different aging methods, barrel types, and ingredients to create new and unique flavor profiles.
  • Use of technology: The whiskey industry is likely to increasingly adopt technology such as AI to optimize production and improve efficiency, as well as to gather data on consumer preferences and behavior.
  • Sustainability: The whiskey industry is likely to focus increasingly on sustainability, in terms of sourcing ingredients, reducing waste, and reducing its environmental impact.
  • Increasing demand: The whiskey industry is likely to continue to grow, driven by increasing demand from consumers, especially in emerging markets.

It’s worth noting that the whiskey industry is a dynamic one, and it’s likely to continue to evolve and change in response to shifts in consumer preferences and advances in technology.

TWW: Guess that will work. Let’s talk boilermakers for a moment. What is it and what do you suggest is a good whiskey pairing?

ChatGPT: A boilermaker is a simple but classic combination of a shot of whiskey and a beer, typically served in a shot glass and a pint glass, respectively. The drink is usually consumed by first drinking the shot of whiskey and then chugging the beer or sipping it afterwards.

As for good whiskey pairings, it really depends on personal preference and the type of beer you are going to pair with. However, some suggested pairings are:

  • A light beer like a pilsner or lager with a smooth, light-bodied whiskey like a bourbon.
  • A dark beer like a stout or porter with a full-bodied whiskey like a rye or a scotch.
  • A hoppy beer like an IPA with a spicy whiskey like a rye or a bourbon with a high rye content.

It’s worth noting that when pairing a whiskey and beer, you want to consider the flavor profiles of both the whiskey and the beer, and try to find a pairing that complements or enhances the flavors of both. Also, it’s important to remember that a boilermaker is a strong drink, and it’s always a good idea to drink responsibly.

[At this point unfortunately the server connection dropped due to usage limitations. We had to wait until later to finish the conversation.]
