Black Button Distilling Opens New New York Distillery, Tasting Room

Black Button Distilling, of Rochester, New York, recently introduced its new, expanded tasting room and distillery.

A statement from the whiskey maker describes the new space as quadruple the size of Black Button’s former location. With 28,000-square-feet of space, the distillery and tasting room will help the brand’s production increase from 1,000 barrels of spirits a year to as much as 4,500 barrels in the first few years.

In addition, the expanded tasting room allows for more seating capacity, private event space, distillery events and expanded hours of operation for the public.

In fact, the overall expansion will add another 10 to 20 jobs to the company within the first year, Black Button officials estimate, with up to 50 jobs in the years to come.

“We have come such a long way in just 10 short years,” said Jason Barrett, Black Button’s founder and master distiller. “From navigating the challenges of growing a capital-intensive business in a competitive marketplace to overcoming regulatory hurdles to surviving and thriving during the pandemic, we’re perfectly poised for the future.”

He noted that their new facility makes them one of the largest bourbon producers in New York State. “We’re committed to elevating the profile of New York State as a competitive, high-quality producer of fine whiskeys in the years to come.”

Along with the grand opening, Black Button is set to release their oldest straight bourbon whiskey to date, aged eight years. In all, there are 170 bottles of this 125-proof single barrel straight whiskey.

Barrett described the whiskey as featuring aromas of chocolate, brown butter, and cinnamon with dry oak on the nose. On the palate, it’s spicy, with notes of cherry cola, molasses and cookie sweetness. It has a long, spicy finish with leather.

As one of the six founding distilleries of Empire Rye, Black Button Distilling is part of a push to bring New York State’s rye whiskey tradition to the forefront.

Black Button Distilling was founded in 2012, and is a licensed New York State Farm Distillery using nearly 100% New York State grown ingredients that come from within 50 miles of the distillery.

You can find Black Button’s whiskey at its new location, in liquor stores throughout New York State, and online at www.blackbuttondistilling.com.
