Whiskey Review: Journeyman Featherbone Bourbon

Tasting Notes:

About:
Appearance:
Golden honey, quick and thin legs
Nose:
Floral, tobacco, slight hint of cola on the tail end of the nose
Palate:
Vanilla, tobacco, decent amount of rye spice. Rather thin mouth feel. Finish: Quick burn with lingering tobacco notes. Journeyman Distillery does not offer an age statement for their Featherbone Bourbon Whiskey, but it does taste young. It isn’t necessarily abrasive, but rather the overall balance is not quite dialed in as much as more seasoned bourbons might be. The finish was rather disappointing, but not a total surprise given the rather thin feel of the bourbon. The product presentation is the star of the show with the bottle and backstory being the most compelling parts of this particular release. Journeyman Featherbone BourbonEditor’s Note: This whiskey was provided to us as a free sample to review by the party behind it. The Whiskey Wash, while appreciative of this, did keep full independent editorial control over this article.

Journeyman Distillery’s Featherbone Bourbon Whiskey is distilled and bottled in Three Oaks, Michigan.  Unusual for a whiskey, Featherbone is named after the building that Journeyman Distillery now calls home. The now defunct Featherbone factory once made leather goods, such as whips and corsets.

It should be noted that this was back during the Prohibition Era, when the mentioning of leather whips and corsets would not elicit quite the same reaction it is likely to today.

Handmade. Organic. The label of Featherbone is adorned with a couple of the more trendy buzz words in the food and drink world today. Whether you are the type of consumer who seeks out or avoids those words at all costs, the true measure of any whiskey will be the blind experience in a simple tasting glass.

Bottled at 90 proof, additional appointments to my sample bottle included a wax seal securing the cork in place, and a hand-numbered batch and bottle label. I have bottle 15 of batch 29, to be specific. I found the overall presentation to be charming and attractive. If nothing else, a bottle of Featherbone will look very nice on display in any bourbon collection.
