Oak Bottle Aims To Better Whiskey Quality In Just A Day (Or More)

For those wanting to age white whiskey at home or improve the quality of a bottle of aged whiskey they’ve already purchased, a few options already exist. Making use of small barrels is usually the best option for the unaged spirit, while specially crafted staves of wood usually target whiskey that’s already passed through a cask. Now another option has come along to compete against these two in the form of an oak bottle that’s said to improve your whiskey’s flavor in as little as one day.

The idea of the Oak Bottle, according to those behind it, is to infuse oak flavor into your whiskey in at most one to four days (the longer in bottle, the more oak that’s infused). This happens by placing the spirit you want to “improve” into the toasted interior bottle, corking it and letting it sit in a dry area out of direct sunlight. After that, it is said to be ready to go, complete with bragging rights that it reportedly can match your friend’s “30 year oak aged whiskey.”

In terms of what happens inside the bottle during the up to 96 hours, the oaking process is said to use “a simple volume divided by surface area equation – it’s easy to understand how a vessel with more surface area touching less volume can infuse the wine or spirit quicker. The smaller the vessel, the faster the oak infusion.” That’s it – nothing more fancy or technical than that.

Now, should you wish to own one of these, be ready to drop upwards of $90 for a 750 ml bottle. There are also a range of flavor infused bottles, such as cherry, that you can also purchase for the same price. Or, for that much money, you could just also buy a really good bottle of bourbon and call it a day.
