Douglas Laing Releases New Rock Island Rum Cask Edition

Independent Scotch whisky maker Douglas Laing & Co. has introduced their newest “Island Malt,” the Rock Island Rum Cask Edition.

A statement from Douglas Laing noted that this latest bottling follows their Rock Island Mezcal Edition from 2022, that one showcasing Rock Island’s maritime spirit finished in Mezcal casks, which imparted a sweet smokiness.

For the Rock Island Rum Cask Edition, it was finished exclusively in Plantation Rum Casks that came from the Caribbean islands of Barbados, Jamaica and Trinidad.

The distiller’s notes show this blend of single cask single malts will have flavors of salted caramel, toasted oak, brown sugar and a touch of smoke.

The packaging for the new bottle features tropical colors of blues, reds and greens accentuated by gold foil detailing. The limited-edition bottling clocks in at 46.8% ABV, with no coloring or chill-filtration.

Emma Reid, Rock Island’s brand manager, said this expression of Rock Island highlights a harmony of flavor, “from the peat-smoked shores of Scotland to the warm climes of the Caribbean, as it brings together two iconic spirits. We cannot wait to share this whisky with Rock Island fans globally.”

Jonas Indesteege, brand manager at Plantation Rum, explained that it was during many trips around the world, Alexandre Gabriel (the creator of Plantation Rum) jumped at the chance to discover the production techniques, traditions, and innovations of his peers … distillers, brewers, and passionate wine growers.

“These encounters enabled him to forge true friendships and, fortunately for lovers of unique spirits, to develop exclusive collaborations and experiments that give birth to deliciously unexpected rums brimming with originality,” Indesteege said. “While visiting Douglas Laing & Co., he found a true connection which was the start of an exceptional partnership.”

The Rock Island Rum Cask Edition will soon be released globally and is expected to have a retail price of £65.

Rock Island joined Douglas Laing’s Remarkable Regional Malts range in 2015, and the small batch Scotch is a marriage of single cask single malts from Orkney, Arran, Jura, and Islay.
