The annual Distiller’s Collection that comes forth from different Scotch single malt whisky distilleries owned by spirits giant Diageo is a rather interesting offering. At its core it is the taking of mature whiskies and finishing them in special secondary casks to draw forth “dynamic flavor possibilities.” The 2020 grouping has now been unveiled.
The Diageo 2020 Distillers Edition collection, according to those behind it, consists of a limited edition line up of whiskies from six distilleries. These include Lagavulin, Oban, Talisker, Cragganmore, Dalwhinnie and Glenkinchie. For each of these, the process in creating these special whiskies follows a two step maturation process.
As indicated by Diageo regarding this, “first each distiller and their team assemble bespoke casks from re-charred American Oak casks and the special, charred cask- ends of brand new American Oak. These unique casks are intentionally created for each distillery’s mature core whisky offering and no other. The casks are then filled with hand-selected fortified wine from Spain or Portugal and aged for one month to develop its exceptionally rare flavor.
“Then, the wine is disgorged, and the casks are refilled with mature Single Malt Scotch Whisky originating from a single year to maintain the utmost consistency. Tended to by each dedicated distillery team, the casks are then rested for up to six months all while being diligently assessed until the desired flavor profile is attained.”
Each one of these whiskies is bottled a a single batch, marked with the date of distillation, bottling and batch number.
