Teeling Whiskey’s Latest Irish Whiskey Gets Portuguese Oak Finish

Teeling Whiskey is set to release its second expression from the Wonders of Wood series of single pot still bottlings.

A statement from Teeling notes that this continues its journey and builds on the brand’s reputation in making unique expressions of Irish whiskey that explore the full spectrum of flavors.

The Wonders of Wood series utilizes different styles of wood for the maturation of Teeling’s Single Pot Still Whiskey.

The second edition here is made from a recipe of 50% malted barley and 50% un-malted barley, which was then triple distilled in the Teeling Whiskey Distillery in Dublin, and finally finished in virgin Portuguese oak barrels.

Teeling’s distillers explained that Portuguese oak is native to the Iberian Peninsula and has a higher tannin content than other oak variants normally used in the whiskey industry. It gives off a distinct savory flavor with hints of tobacco and pepper.

The first edition from this series was named World’s Best Single Pot Still at the 2022 World Whiskies Awards.

And with this series, Teeling Whiskey is giving back to its local communities as each bottle of Wonders of Wood purchased helps the Tree Council of Ireland in the reforestation of a designated area of woodland with exclusively native Irish trees.

From the first release, the Teeling statement explained, an acre of native oak trees were planted in the Glencree region of County Wicklow just outside of Dublin. The second release will allow for a second acre to be planted, this time in County Dublin, again in partnership with the Tree Council of Ireland.

Jack Teeling, founder and managing director of Teeling Whiskey, said, “Wood is an amazing, sustainable and environmentally friendly material that plays a huge role in developing the flavor and character of a whiskey as it matures. We are truly in wonder of the role wood has in crafting our Teeling Whiskeys as well as its impact on the wider environment, so as part of our new series we wanted to do our part in helping the replanting of our native Irish forests.”

This bottle of Irish Single Pot Still clocks in at 50% ABV and comes in an embossed Teeling Whiskey bottle.
